good food great price at Zorba's
Your typical luncheonette Zorba’s would be easy to pass up but would be a mistake to do so. The quality and portions are anything but typical. They boast a “world famous” chicken salad and I can see why. The food is all made to order in a fast a friendly atmosphere. Eat in or take out Zorba’s is a winner.
Dishes I tried:
Grilled Chicken Salad
What a pleasant surprise my salad was. The portion is so large they can barely close the to go container. The chicken is pleantyful and seasoned with lots of oregano (Zorba’s) just what you would expect. It is grilled and served on top of a bead of fresh greens with tomaote and cucumbers. topped with fries. The house dressing was fresh and light and added to the flavor of this classic salad. Truely an oversized portion enough to share or take home for later in the day.
Black Angus Cheeseburger
This was the best value you can find in town. The burger was cooked to order on a fresh oversized bun topped with cheese lettuce tomaroe and onion and mayo. What a delight this was. For the price of McD you will savor this burger and will find yourself returning again for a quick and delicious meal.
what a value this lunch is for someone working in the city.

Bye Bye Bar Louie
A few weeks ago I thought I would give Bar Louie another chance. Heck you can get a bad meal anytime and it may not happen again. Well it DID and it was even worse than my sad salmon benedict. Upon entering Bar Louie and being told by the hostess to just sit anywhere (what is she there for?) we did have our choice of seats, since only about 4 tables were filled we sat down and waited and waited and continued to wait till I finally had to go up to the bartender to ask if there was anyone to service our table. Finally a menu. We are now 1/2 hour into brunch. We placed our order and yes got our donut holes yahooooo! That was the highlight of our brunch. Yes donut holes. I had to return my pancakes which were credited off my bill and my guest had to return his soft boiled eggs which were hard boiled. The second set of eggs were ok. After eating and not eating brunch we were happy to leave Bar Louie never to return again. We should have gone to Perkins!!!.
Dishes I tried:
pancakes
After our extremely long wait for service my mouth was watering for a stack of warm fluffy pancakes, I ordered the maple buttered ones which as I recall cost an extra buck for flavored butter. When the plate of 3 large pancakes arrived I was shocked that something would come out of the kitchen looking like this! The pancakes looked like 3 flat flour tortillas. Even worse they tasted like cardboard. 2 bites and back to the kitchen they went. They were credited off my bill and I ate the 2 sausage links I ordered on the side for of course an additional charge of around 3 bucks.
I feft hungry only having donut holes and sausage.
Big Louie Breakfast.
My guest ordered this mess. It was suppose to be 2 eggs any style and they were any style, what ever they felt like like throwing on the plate. It also included 2 of the cardboard torilla style pancakes which we did not touch, tater tots which were just that a tater tot (hard to screw those up) an order of bacon which was ok The true highlight was the eggs. They were ordered soft boiled for dipping toast and when the plate arrived we did not see any eggs. Hidden under the “pancake” were two little sacks or hard boiled yolk with a film of white covering them. We sent them back and the remake was ok. Just ok. Of course they did not comp this I guess since the comp’d my pancakes they did not feel the need.
I WILL NEVER GO TO BAR LOUIE AGAIN FOR BRUNCH AND NEITHER SHOULD YOU.

Amazing Brunch
What a pleasant surprise Casbah was. From the street you would not think this establishment wasn’t as classy as it is inside. Tastefully decorated with great art work you enter to a covered patio area that is fully heated and bodes white linens. I will most certainly be returning for one of the best brunches I have had in years. I would also like to try Casbah for dinner sometime. The brunch includes a beverage, appetizer and entre for $22.00. What a deal this was!
Dishes I tried:
smoked salmon with truffled potatoe cake
The Potato cake was the best. Crisp and crunchy on the outside moist and flavorful inside. This sat on top of a dinner size plate of smoke salmon thinly sliced and topped with chopped egg. red onion, capers and decorated with an aioli sauce. A meal in itself this was the appetizer leading to my brunch entre. It is big enough to share but take the time and enjoy it all by yourself.
Braised Lamb and eggs
What a nice twist to eggs Benedict. Served on grilled sour dough toast are sautéed spinach topped with perfectly cooked poached eggs. To add to it all was a braised lamb shank with an amazing sauce to replace the hollandaise sauce generally found on a Benedict type dish. If you like lamb you are going to love this breakfast entre. I can’t wait to return and take some friends and family with me to share one of the best brunch experiences Pittsburgh has to offer.

Great Eats
The Pines is a lovely ranch house restored to a restaurant with all the comforts of home. Adorned with a large bay window and a fireplace it is cozy and comfortable. The service is good and the food is even better. The menu is extensive with daily specials. Many of the offerings come from the Pines own garden. You can’t get any fresher than this. For the holidays it is a wonderland to visit. Although it was not decorated the evening I was there, I have been there and the holiday decorations will remind you of being at home.
Dishes I tried:
Grilled Pennsylvania Venison Medallions and Apricot stuffed Quial
What a wonderful local fall entre this was. My venison was done to perfection. Two medallions grilled and topped with a shallot cabernet glaze melted in my mouth. Don’t be afraid of a gamey taste. You would think this was filet. The quail was so cute and small but stuffed with a spoonful of some of the best dressing I have ever eaten. It left my mouth craving for more. The entre was served with crispy fried parsnips which were just a garnish which I could have eaten a basket of these crisp little straws. The vegtable was a cinnamon spaetzle with cremini mushrooms and brussel sprouts. The spaetzle and shrooms were amazing but the sprouts were a bit under cooked and bitter for my taste. Overall, I just loved this meal and would order it again.

Diner Delight
If you looking for a hearty all american breakfast look no further than the Freedom Square Diner. Located on the western side of Cranberry you may have difficulty seeing this little gem tucked away behind the big CVS stucture. Don’t let the lines scare you, they move fast like any old time diners. It is not decorated in the old time diner style but more of a modern eatery that is clean, bright and airy. Breakfast is served all day but all day closes early at 8 p.m. The menu is balanced with an extensive choice of breakfast lunch and dinner entres. This is a place to go for that comfort food which we rarely see on a menu, liver and onions, shepherd’s pie, pot roast and roast turkey and most impressively a full array of devonshires, steak, crabcake and the standard turkey. I have to return to re-live the sandwich of my youth!
Dishes I tried:
Banana Walnut French Toast
If you looking for something a little different this is the dish. Three thick slices of moist homemade banana nut bread is very lightly coated in an egg batter and fried to a golden brown served with maple syrup. I enjoyed the light hint of banana and the crunch of the walnuts.
The texture was fairly dense and moist and the portion so large come with a healthy appetite.
corned beef hash
What could be more comforting than a large plate with a generous portion of corned beef hash?
The hash was moist and not a bit greasy. Topped with 2 extra large perfectly done poached eggs for dipping your toast. The breakfast was served with a choice of potatoes. I had the home fries which I really did not need since potoates are part of corned beef hash. I really enjoyed this breakfast and would recommend it to anyone who likes corned beef hash.

Staple in Shadyside
If you have not been to the Elbow Room you missing one of Shadyside’s oldest and best establishments. I think this place has been around since the 40’s but personally I have only been going there since the 70’s. It has grown and evolved in time and now has additional dining space to the side of the original bar and outdoor patio which is so quaint and secluded for a city establishment. Friendly service and great food has always been a staple at the Elbow.
Dishes I tried:
Our Famous Hot Grilled Chicken Salad
I could eat this salad every day. Nicely portioned, not to big (I hate salads you can’t finish since they don’t take home well) not to small just the right size meal. This salad is layered with a few French fries which are thin and crisp then topped with fresh garden greens. Next comes all the goodies…. onions, peppers and mushrooms which have been lightly sautéed al dente topped with a grilled chicken breast and shredded cheddar cheese make this salad a complete meal. Perfectly balanced this salad is big on flavor. I think my favorite part is that it is not loaded with big fat fries but has those wonderful sautéed vegetables and fresh tomatoes as the main filler. I get the creamy garlic dressing which is fantastic.

Outdoor dining at it's best
Tucked away off of Rt 19 is Frescos which offers an extensive dinner menu from light fares, sandwiches and pizzas to full course dinners. It is tastefully appointed and boasts a intimate deck space with outdoor bar and live entertainment.
Dishes I tried:
Veal Medallions Romano
Thinly sliced and tender veal medallions were dipped in a light egg and cheese batter and gently sautéed to perfection then topped with fresh mozzarella and roasted grape tomatoes. Absolutely delicious! The risotto was amazing flavored with sun dried tomatoes it was a perfect complement to the veal. Additionally there was a sauté summer squash served which completed this meal. I also had a lovely wine flight consisting of 3 wines from different regions for 10.00. All of this served outdoors under a large oak tree, lit with tiny white lights and live entertainment made for a wonderful celebration dinner.

Antipasti after work
This is not my favorite place as far as atmostphere. I feel it lack the intimacy that a good italian eatery should have. It is tastfully appointed and I love the glass work but the bar that faces the kitchen does not make for an inviting experience. I was there to meet some friends after work and we sat at the bar and shared a few appetizers. The food is a bit on the pricey side but worth it. On the other hand the wine as very highly priced and not worth it. We ended up buying a bottle to share which was the best way to go.
Dishes I tried:
Frico:
This was by far the best thing we ordered. There were 3-4 little pockets of cripy fried cheese, leek and potato stuffed with a rich mixture of aspargus and bacon. Anything with bacon is good but this was excellent. I wanted more and next time don’t think I will agree to share.
Fritto Misto
Light coated with a well seasoned batter the platter was full of calamari and shrimp nestled among some asparagus and fennel. It was a nice combo and was enjoyed by all. I liked the coating which was very light and let the taste of the seafood shine.
tomatoe salad
This was a special on the evening we were there. I don’t think it is always on the menu. Being tomatoe season, the salad was full of fresh tomaotes and a great variety. Yellow and striped as well as the traditional red. Laced with cheese and topped with a light O&V it was cool and refreshing.

Happy Hour at Willow
I love this place. I have been here many times for dinner but last week decided to try happy hour at the bar. The atmostphere at Willow is wonderful. As you enter the establishment you come to the well appointed bar and just behind the bar is a cozy lounge area complete with comfy couches and a fireplace. These are the two areas which host the 5-7 happy hour specials. They have a happy our menu full of sandwiches and appetizers all reasonably priced. The house wines and beers are discounted as well as a selection of $6 martini’s.
Dishes I tried:
rueben
I had rueben sandwich which was very good. It was a typical rueben but the kraut was very tasty. I would recommend this.
Hambuger
I tasted the bar-b-qued burger and it was great. Loaded with bacon and a tangy bar-b-que sauce. Another thimbs up.

Loads of character
Rialto …..Circa -1796 – 1888 – 1988 HISTORIC NOTE….. The Rialto Cafe was one of the original stone buildings in Greensburg (completed in 1796 and called Barne’s Inn). It served as a popular rest stop for travelers when journeying on Forbes Road from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh. Greensburg became known as a town of taverns and inns to accommodate the steady traffic of post riders and pack horses passing through. Ownership of the building was transferred to the Stark Family, who were renowned stage coach (and later carriage) manufacturers whose business prospered through the Civil War until 1879. In 1888, Mr. Stark completed the rebuilding of one of the finest brick business blocks in the town, which has stood the “test of time” until purchased by The Montuori Family in 1933 and named The Rialto Cafe. The site of the new outside cafe was once the dining room where Nono Bernardino prepared his original Italian dishes. Ownership was passed on to Mr. And Mrs. Dom Montuori (son) and became known as Dom’s a favorite spot for Seton Hill and St. Vincent College students. Current owners are third generation- Dom’s daughters, Angela and Donna. It is their dream to continue the long established tradition of The Rialto Cafe as a landmark and gathering place in downtown Greensburg.I should have done research prior to going there. It is located right next to the Palace theater so if you are going to see a show there, this is a good convenient place to dine prior to the show.
Dishes I tried:
Chicken Salad
I am sorry I ordered a salad after reading reviews and seeing the Italian fare. The chicken salad was good. It was a large portion of lettuce, and the usual garden veggies. Served with grilled chicken but what was most interesting was at the bottom of the salad were chopped beets which I adore. They also included hard boild egg which was a nice addition. There were maybe a few to many fries for my taste and they were big thick steak fries. I ordered the ranch dressing on the side. I would like to note that table next to us got the Lasagna, which looked fantastic and I have read that the chicken parmesan is suburb.
