delicious food served in a no-nonsense way.
i had the salt and pepper tofu with mushrooms, which was delicious and filling. my friend got sesame chicken with sweet potatoes (whatever you do — GET THE SWEET POTATOES). we also got the egg rolls on a recommendation from our server, and they were amazing.

this was the perfect place for a celebratory meal with the family. l’explorateur is in an old house in broadripple, and i think that may help reel in the pretentiousness despite the elegant menu. though i was nervous about being so far inland, i got oysters and my brother got hamachi for appetizers. both were delicate and delicious. i also tried the spicy frog legs. i wasn’t too excited about my skate wing entree, but that may be because i don’t like skate wing in general (and i wouldn’t know because it was my first time). the desserts were also perfectly sized and flavored. the staff was both helpful and friendly, and they were understanding about us having a loud baby in tow and tried to find ways to entertain her in their little yard when we took her outside to give the other diners a break.

my brunch here was delightful. their home fries are irrestible, and so are the pommes frites; i guess they really have a handle on their potatoes. my scramble was good, too, but not exciting. though the seating area is somewhat small, it doesn’t feel cramped. i liked the diy coffee bar. the line was long (even on a saturday at 10am, which i think is slightly ahead of the brunch rush) but it was worth it.
