Bongo Room in the South Loop

This place is great! I usually stick to the pancakes as they are so unique, creative and, most importantly, decadent. This is a place for the sweet tooths who will regard the Bongo Room as their fantasy breakfast spot. Come hungry cause you won’t want to stop eating!

I really enjoyed the pancakes. My only complaint was that they were almost too rich!

Dishes I tried:

Guacamole Huasteco

I consider myself a guacamole having sampled the guac all of over the city and this is by bar some of the best if not the best I have had. They add just the right amount of spice and leave the avocado chunky and, for their twist, they include a little cactus in there to add a little bit of sourness. Absolutely incredible!

Tarte Tres Leches

This dessert is too good for words. They mary up a chocolate crust with tradtional tres leche chocolate cake and top it off with a light chocolate mousse, dark cherries and a tube of pure chocolate. All of this sits on a bed of vanilla sause surrounded by chocolate sauce and it all has a hint of cinnamon. ITs a very decadent dessert that remains very light so you don’t feel guilty. You have to try this!

Coopers

Coopers was previously called Menagerie and is owned by the same folks. They decided it was time for a change and put together a casual restaurant with gourmet food at very reasonable prices combined with one of the best beer lists in Chicago.

The owners are also great people and ensure a comfortable atmosphere where the service is top notch.

Dishes I tried:

HOUSE PULLED PORK & COLESLAW PANINI

Slow cooked goodness and full of flavor this house smoked pulled pork is a true treat.

Nothing crazy just a good fired pizza. Goes great with any of their top notch beers.

I was unsure at first about this mac and cheese since it included duck but the owners assured me it was great and, well, it was amazing! If you go to Cooper’s you need to try this appetizer.

Sapori Trattoria

Sapori reminds me a lot of my favorite Italian restaurants in my former stomping grounds – the North End of Boston. The resaurant in cozy and offers a nice soothing atmosphere. They also serve incredible homemade food that has already brought me back twice. Probably some of the best Italian food in Chicago.

Dishes I tried:

Bolognese

This is simple traditional rigatoni with bolognese sauce but done incredibly well. The rigatoni is handmade at the restaurant and the bolognese is probably the best I ever had. One you eat the bolognese at Sapori you’ll never want to have it anywhere else.

Ann Sathers

Who doesn’t love this place? I know I happen to be Swedish but I think everyone is in love with this place. My favorite thing at Ann Sather’s are the cinnamon rolls. They are to die for.

The swedish pancakes are incredible. Topped with the traditional lingonberries the pancakes will take you straight to Sweden (although it’ll be nice and warm where you’re sitting in the restaurant).

Gotta Love da Brickhouse

Joey’s Brickhouse is my kind of restaurant. You get gourmet quality “regular” food in a relaxed (not snuity) atmosphere and the place is just fun. Prices are great too with the burder at about $9 and the full meals at around $15. Also, every Tuesday is all you can eat pizza, salad and rice crispy treats and all you can drink beer (anything they have on tap) for only $15. Can’t beat that!

Dishes I tried:

Sirloin Burger

The burger I received was cooked to perfection and the four cheese blend is super tasty. The burger also comes with a big (and I mean big) pickle and Joey’s signature cone o’ fries which are actually lightly sugared instead of salted (you may think it’s weird but it’s really good). I would recommend this burger to anyone and at $9 what do you have to lose?

Muskie's is Straight out of the 50s

And I love it! Muskie’s is a little Hambruger hut out of the 50s that still serves things like malts and root beer floats (and killer milk shakes). They also do all their burgers and dogs to order for less than you’d sped at a fast food place. A sign of a good burger hut is always handcut fries and Muskie’s doesn’t disappoint on that front either. You’ve gotta check this place out.

Muskie’s always does a great job with their burgers. They cook to order over an open flame (yup – it’s char broiled for real unlike BK) and can top the burgers with the usual lettuce, tomato, cheese, ketchup, mustard, etc. They also throw in a pickle. Great burger and it is under $4 (by a long shot). Can’t beat it!

Capital Grille is Top Shelf

This place is defintiely top shelf so if you don’t want to feel a little weird make sure you’re dressed nicely. I showed up in “entrepreneur” clothes (t-shirt and jeans) since I didn’t know how fancy it was. Anyhow, the place is not pretentious and the food is great. I can’t say too much since I was there for a business meeting and didn’t focus too much on the atmosphere but I’d recommend it.

Dishes I tried:

The Grille's Signature Cheeseburger

This is was great burger. I have had some good ones in my time but this would make the top 3 hands down. It almost doesn’t need to have any toppings because the meat is so good. I can’t say mush more than this is one of the must eat burgers in Chicago.
