excellent service

Semo sushi is a small japanese restaurant in Fremont with an extensive selection of decently priced sushi rolls and other Japanese fare. The food is well prepared and the fish is quite fresh.

What makes Semo sushi stand out, though, is the excellent service you receive. The staff is quite friendly and attentive, but also are attuned with the proper times to ask if you need anything.

They are also extremely knowledgeable and, in my opinion, have excellent taste. During our meal, we were having trouble deciding which rolls to order off the extensive menu, so we asked our waiter Tim for recommendations. After just telling what kind of fish and other ingredients were craving, he was able to select an incredible set of rolls that complemented each other extremely well. The service really topped off a great night!

a place you can count on

I’ve never eaten in the newly renovated Tony’s, and I probably never will. However, I will continue to order food from this family run joint without fear of being disappointed.

Tony’s offers traditional Philadelphia fare such as cheesesteaks, hoagies, and other sandwiches. They have a wide selection for breakfast and other entrees too.

Dishes I tried:

honey dipped fried chicken (4pc)

I was expecting chicken fingers, but was pleasantly surprised to find “bone-in” chicken pieces. Pretty tasty.

fresh and refreshing

If not for being unfortunately located on the west side of the chestnut bridge before the penn campus really starts, Picnic would probably have lines out the door.

While the food is not spectacular, their changing menu has fresh and tasty “homemade” items. Their offerings are drastically different than the normal fare nearby and, for this, I owe them for keeping me out of the culinary doldrums.

tasty thai

Unlike pad thai shack, smile cafe serves authentic thai cuisine in a genuine thai atmosphere. The chicken green curry was good, yet unspectacular. The regular menu is overpriced with entrees ranging from $11-$15, but the lunch specials provide more reasonable options (though still expensive). The restaurant is a small space, hidden away on 22nd St between Chestnut and Walnut.

large selection of italian favorites

Fellini Cafe offers a large selection of classic Italian American dishes. The menu is extensive, and can be a bit overwhelming, but you’re guaranteed to find something that fits your mood. The food is simply prepared, but ultimately satisfying.

higher class comfort meal for under $12

The Marathon Grill restaurants offer a wide variety of grilled comfort foods. Menu items that include platters or sandwiches of salmon, prime rib, braised short ribs, halibut, eggplant, a variety of salads, and others are prepared well at prices that won’t break the bank. This restaurant is a good place when to eat out or take out when the normal fare just won’t cut it.

comes prepared in three ways:
1) olive tapenade + hard–cooked egg + arugula
2) lemongrass–ginger + grilled onions + roasted peppers
3) cajun–spiced + sautéed mushrooms + piquillo peppers + goat cheese

horrible fish

Being three months removed from california, I was craving sushi and figured I could use some brain food before my midterm.

Unfortunately, I picked the wrong place. I’m not sure how they made the rainbow roll I ordered, but it didn’t taste like fish or anything I’m used to. I ended up scrounging around my kitchen to wash the taste out of my mouth.

hid away italian

Melograno is a nice small Italian restaurant just west of the rittenhouse area. The food was solid. They didn’t really do anything great nor poor. The decor and atmosphere are pleasant, though it felt a bit crowded. Maybe I just ordered the wrong things since this restaurant is popular.

decent chinese in center city

The majority of chinese restaurants in philly (outside of chinatown) cater to more americanized tastes. Peking is not one of them. This restaurant is run by a Chinese family that eats its own fare together during meal hours. The portions are large and the tastes are authentic.

Dishes I tried:

Ma Po Tofu

Enough for two! A bit non-traditional as this dish includes mushrooms and cabbage along with the pork and tofu.
