Gordito's Healthy Mexican Food

Oct 12, 2007 Link

my favorite mexican place

I suppose the restaurant is sort of dingy looking, but it is one of the best places to get real mexican food in north Seattle. To me, it looks like every other dingy mexican restaurant I’ve ever seen, so it doesn’t bother me at all. This place makes mexican food like I’m used to eating in California – cheap, and full of good stuff. The guacamole is awesome. The burritos are giant. I usually eat one for three or four meals. The enchiladas and the quesadillas are also good.

Mall Pizza, it was cold

Standard mall kind of pizza I guess, but it was cold and unappealling by the time I got it back to my office (about 3 blocks walk).

Bluefin Sushi & Seafood Buffet

Oct 12, 2007 Link

Expensive for medium/low quality food

I wasn’t expecting a high quality selection of sushi, but it was fairly expensive for the quality of food that you get. The sushi was falling apart and warm, and there were about 10 kinds of rolls and 10 kinds of nigiri. The seafood consisted of shrimp cocktail and crab legs. The tempura was pretty good, as was the teriyaki. There was a section of chinese and korean food that I didn’t try.

It was pretty busy for a Friday night, but it was easy to get a table for two. Service was slow (drinks, clearing plates) but every table was full so it could have just been that they were short-handed. Lots of parking since its in Northgate Mall (near JC Penny).

I’m not sure if the same dishes are offered at lunch, but you probably get a better deal at only 16.99/person vs 26.99 a person for dinner.

The sign at the front desk said “competitive prices with the Eating Factory – now with free soda!” You know, because the soda makes all the difference?!

Portage Bay Cafe

good menu variety, can get really busy

We went at about 9:30 am on a Saturday, and waited about 20 minutes for a table for two. Not too bad, but when were leaving the line was incredibly huge and looked more like an hour wait.

I liked the variety of dishes on the menu, and I really appreciate how they “sourced” the various ingredients. The toppings bar had a ton of beautiful fresh fruit and nuts for putting on your pancakes, oatmeal, or toast. The raspberries were crazy delicious.

There’s a parking lot next to the cafe, or there seemed to be plenty of street parking. I think I like the benedict at Wild Mountain better, but I will definitely come here again to try some french toast or maybe an omelette.

What I ate:
  • ****

hollandaise was good but not great, paired with fresh fruit instead of potatoes made for just the right flavors and serving size

The Cheesecake Factory

Aug 24, 2007 Link

too busy to be worth it

Its nice to have a place to go that specializes in desserts, but if you are hungry for a real meal I would go somewhere else. If a convention is going on, good luck getting in. We waited more than an hour because there were so many people coming across the street from the convention center.

When they call it a factory they mean it – the whole restaurant feels cavernous and cafeteria like. The menu is a giant spiral bound book, so I imagine there is no one thing that they are especially good at making.

Save your money for something better – the Pike Place market is only a few blocks away from this location and you have many many places to choose from there.

La Isla (formerly Sofrito Rico)

weird crowd, tasty food

The restaurant is a little small, and on a nice evening people seem to fill up the small outdoor area in the front. There was a family of 5 eating right next to a romantic couple eating next to a group of 6 rowdy young drunks. The atmosphere was slightly too weird for my taste; there’s just some strange vibes going on between the servers and the eclectic crowd.

The food was very good though. Nice mix of flavors without being too strong or too weak. I had the pastelon and my friend had the carne guisada. Each is served with red beans, rice, and some tasty garlic sauce. I would definitely eat here again, but maybe just get it to go next time.

What I ate:
  • *****

Just the right amount of cheese, meat, and sweet plantains

  • ***

Good, but kind of just tasted like beef stew with carrots to me.

Extras:
I came here for

My meal cost
between $10 and $25

Ok for bubble tea in a mall

I feel like the prices are a little high and they put a smaller scoop of tapioca in than other bubble tea places in the u-district. Sometimes the tapioca balls seem a little hard to me, but the quality probably depends on what time of day you go and when they last made some.
I pretty much only go here when I really feel like having bubble tea and I can’t make it all the way down to the International District from work.

What I ate:

Ice cream flavored green tea smoothie, but its made from a powder not actual ice cream.

Red Mill Burgers

Excellent burgers but always very busy

I love to go here, but it is almost always busy. On nice summer days you can’t even get in the door the line is so long. But, the line is so long because everyone agrees – Red Mill has awesome food.

It is cash or check only.

What I ate:
  • ****

just the right amount of crispiness. kind of greasy

  • ****

    great combo of flavors

A huge selection of sandwiches and salads. I like the smoked salmon sandwich or the chicken and goat cheese sandwich and italian pasta salad. This place is always incredibly busy. Expect to wait in line.

Sushi Kudasai

Jul 17, 2007 Link

quick, cheap, and tasty sushi lunch spot

This is the only place I eat sushi while I’m at work downtown. This isn’t going to be the highest quality sushi around, but it is pretty good for being so cheap. They also make up your order pretty quickly, so it is great to run in and grab something within 10 minutes (if the line is short).

This place is located inside a food court next to Borders bookstore, and there’s lots of other food options if you are eating out with a bunch of other people that might not want sushi. The seating area is pretty large.

This place is lunch only. They might close around 4pm or even earlier.

What I ate:
  • ***

Tuna, cream cheese, avocado. Decent, not the best.
