Fabulous Italian in Olympia!
Mercatos is the place to go for classy Italian in Olympia! They have the dark wood and dim lighting to set the mood. Their waitstaff give you ample time to study the menu before offering further explanations. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, their great-tasting food. I didn’t think I could get away with something not Olive Garden in Olympia but I did. Stop by for a well-rounded dining experience if you get the chance!
Dishes I tried:
Prawns Caprese
My favorite combination of tomato slices, mozzarella cheese, and basil with balsamic vinegar drizzled on top PLUS grilled prawns topped with prosciutto. I will forever crave this appetizer at Italian restaurants.
Penne di Pollo alla Toscana
Pasta tossed with sautéed chicken, prosciutto, oregano, and a tuscan sun-dried tomato cream sauce. A little on the dry side and the flavor a bit bland.
Pear and Gorgonzola
Grilled pear slices over field greens with caramelized hazelnuts, gorgonzola cheese, and blackberry vinaigrette. I love this combination of fruit, cheese, and nuts in a vinaigrette salad.

Piping hot pho in Redmond!
Nothing is better than a hot bowl of soup noodles on a rainy fall day in Seattle. Than Brothers not only provided a (spacious) safe haven from the gusting wind and rain, their pho warmed me from my fingers to my toes.
At Than Brothers, the menu is simple and straightforward; you can choose between the vegetarian, chicken, meatball, or beef pho (though there are plenty of beef arrangements to make you indecisive). Their broth is pretty good and I was impressed with their tender meat (the beef round steak and brisket).
The best part about it? The price: small is $4.25, regular $4.75. There’s two more sizes but I didn’t look beyond the regular. In any case, you’ll come away with a nice bowl of pho and a free custard-filled puff pastry for no more than six or so dollars. =)

Time to rate the food! Read about the crappy service here
Dishes I tried:
Fok Chow Fried Rice
I thought this was ok but everyone else loved it. They used fatty duck meat in this, which is unlike what I’ve had at other places. The fried rice just seemed kinda plain though all the ingredients are suppose to be in the gravy topping anyway.
Baked Egg Custard Tart
I shall never order this again! Our server said that they were baking them fresh but when it came 2 of the 3 were piping hot and the third (which I got) was cold. Well, room temperature. The custard was also way too sweet. Bleh.
BBQ Pork Bun
BBQ pork in a soft, steamed white bun. This came out fresh and hot. One of their better dishes there.
Steamed Prawn Dumpling
This could be smaller/daintier and they could compliment it with a dipping sauce but it’s fine without. A classic dish to get at dim sum.
Beef Vermicelli Wrap
I wasn’t impressed with this one. Too much vermicelli and too little ingredients. They also didn’t drizzle sauce over it like I am used to so it looked like one big white mound of rice noodles.
Mini Sticky Rice
If it weren’t so salty it’d be a 5-star. Steamed sticky rice with meat, mushrooms, and unaccountable veggies, wrapped in a lotus leaf (or so I was told).
Bean Tip and Prawn Bean Curd Wrap
Looks good (green bean tips with the orangey prawn in a beige wrap) and tastes good. Try it!
Chinese Donut in Vermicelli Wrap
It’s simple enough but it tastes good, either with a bit of soy sauce or the overly-sweet sauce they bring you. Eat it while it’s hot or the “donut” will get soggy.
Pork and Shrimp Dumpling
I prefer this to their “prawn dumpling” since there’s more to it than prawns. Somehow, the pork dimension makes it so much more delicious. It’s also more like shumai, not wrapped with the clear wrap as in the prawn dumpling.
Bean Curd Mushroom Wrap
This is the steamed bean curd wrap with mushroom and other veggies stuffed inside. I think I just like the other bean curd wrap (which is deep-fried) better. Plus I’m not a cilantro fan and there’s a bit of it in this dish.

decent Japanese tapas restaurant in Seattle
I’m such the brat. I think Maekawa is decent by Seattle’s standards but since I’ve been to izakayas in Japan, I give it a three-star. Our waitstaff was friendly but not as attentive as I would’ve liked. As for the food, some dishes are tastier than others but most were not quite on par with Japan’s standards, or just standards of a great dish. That being said, I’d still go back to try out their other items since there’s so much to choose from. Plus it’ll be a fun hang-out with large groups of people (and open till 2am on weekends).
Dishes I tried:
Kushikatsu with miso sauce
Deep-fried breaded pork or chicken cutlet with onions and your choice of miso or tonkatsu sauce. I had chicken with miso. It was very tasty and filling. I’d definitely get it again.
Salmon Tsutsumi
Waaaay small portion of a salmon filet and some enoki mushrooms cooked in a sweet mirin broth and wrapped tin foil. Not worth the money!
Buta Kimchee Nabe
I like my napa cabbage soggy so I felt they could’ve cooked it longer for that purpose..and for the flavor to seep through. It was a good dish to get, though: it warms you up from the inside out with just the right amount of spicyness.
Karaage
Fried chicken, japanese style. I wish the chicken chunks were smaller but I really liked the thin breading and the citrusy yuzu dressing for dipping.
Yaki Nasu
Grilled eggplants with bonita flakes. Simple yet juicy and good. Eat it with a bit of the ginger and dip it in soy sauce~ mmm
Albacore Tataki
Hmm, this wasn’t the best seared tuna dish. Nothing impressive tho it was ok-tasting. I wouldn’t order it again.

japanese dishes you'd find in japan
Unlike Xuster before me, I had more hot dishes than sushi while dining at Shiro’s. In fact, the closest I came to sushi was the spicy tuna roll, which numbed my tongue (in a good way) whenever I popped one in my mouth. I also had their “poke”, which was tuna chunks topped with green onions and marinated in ponzu (citrus dressing)—this one was unique because I am used to soy sauce and garlic flavored poke . Both were excellent tuna dishes.
Perhaps the reason why I didn’t order sashimi was my delight at seeing dishes that I’d find in restaurants in Japan: kimpira (burdock roots), agedashi tofu (deep-fried tofu in a broth), and mozuku (vinegared seaweed). I wouldn’t say that they’re spectacular, because they’re simply considered home cuisine in Japan, but it felt good to be eating “comfort foods” at Shiro’s.
All in all, I had a good experience from the moment the sushi chefs welcomed us in to the moment the servers arigatou-ed us out. It may be slightly pricey but worth it for the service and quality and authenticity of food.
Next time I’m getting sashimi… =p
Dishes I tried:
Poke, Belltown
A twist to the soy-sauce based poke I had in Hawaii but refreshing and good. Comes with thinly jullienned daikon and a couple pieces of cucumbers.
Tai or Smelt Umeshiso Age
My second favorite dish next to the poke. Loved the textures of the tender fish meat with crisp shiso and tempura outside. Just squeeze some lemon juice and enjoy~ Eat it while it’s hot!
Spicy Tuna Roll
This one’s on the spicy side, but pretty good. 6 pieces per order. Good for sharing.
Kimpira Yuba-agemaki
A little overpriced for 4 pieces of deep-fried burdock roots in yuba (soy) wrap. I like burdock roots themselves deep-fried (like tempura); it’s crunchy like french fries, but healthier. It was a little bland so I wouldn’t order again.

mmm matcha!
I’m more of a tea-drinker than anything else (read: coffee) so I was pretty excited when I discovered KOOTS in Lincoln Square. The whole place has a calming effect due to its wood decor and the installation of a tatami mat space, which nearly transports me to the japanese tea ceremony that I study. I like the non-franchise feel, unlike its neighboring cafes, and the fact that they use organic ingredients is a plus.
If you’re new to matcha (thick, frothy, and almost-always bitter green tea), try the matcha soft serve. It’s one of the best I’ve ever tasted. Their hot beverages can be inconsistent in flavor.
Dishes I tried:
Matcha latte
The last one I had was a tad too bitter, possibly because the tea powder wasn’t whisked all the way through or there was too much match powder. It was good at the bottom where the milk had collected.
Matcha Soft Serve
Sooo good, even in the winter. Honestly one of the best matcha ice creams around. The waffle cone is cheaper than a cup.
Goma (Black Sesame) Smooth
When it’s made right: rich, creamy, and fragrant. I’ve had a diluted one, though, bleh. Press your luck.

cakes, breads, and pastries galore!
There’s only two bakeries I go to in the states because I get spoiled by them in Taiwan (and am therefore picky); L’Artisan French Bakery is one of them. The shop is clean and bright and the presentation of the cakes, pastries, and breads makes you want to try them all! I have tried most cakes and a lot of pastries and everything really is great. I also like to go for lunch sometimes because they serve sandwiches and quiche; add a drink and dessert and you have one fulfilling meal for less than $10!
The owners and servers are always friendly.
On the warmer days you can sit outside and enjoy the breeze and surrounding greenery.
If you’re ever in the area go try a cake or pastry! I bet it’ll be good. The Everett Costco is also nearby for your shopping pleasure.
Dishes I tried:
Mixed Fruit Tart
This used to be my favorite dessert because you get the crust on the bottom, custardy middle, and loads of fruit on top. It’s gotten really sweet for me so 4-stars until they realize it’s too sweet. Pair it with tea if you’re sensitive like me.
Ganache
MMmmm chocolate. Chocolate cake layered with chocolate and coated with chocolate ganache. It’s rich so share with a friend, or with tea or milk to balance it out. Soo good.
Chicken Breast Avocado Sandwich
I love this sandwich. They make all sandwiches to order so it’s always fresh. You can choose between sandwich roll (hard, like a mini french bread) or croissant. This one in particular has chicken breast, avocado, tomato, and ranch. It’s a little bland if you don’t salt and pepper but I guess it’s a good thing they leave the salt and pepper to the customers’ desire.
Almond Croissant
My mom and brother LOVE this croissant; they would give 5 stars. They also like nuts more than I do, hence why I give it 4 stars. It’s really good: flaky, chewey, fragrant, sweet but not TOO sweet. Almond slices outside, almond paste inside, powder sugar on top. Great with coffee or tea.
