Simply the Best

I have eaten food at Lares Restaurant and also CATERED by Lares for TWO L.A. Westside private events, one in a fancy Brentwood home a few months ago, and last night at a home in Cheviot Hills. Both times, it was the best chile rellenos and carnitas that I have ever eaten, anywhere, including in Mexico. No kidding. The pleasant and efficient staff also were serving three other entrées plus beans, rice, etc., but I just feasted on the rellenos and carnitas. They were indescribably delicious, with the sweet cheese, fresh, lean meats, freshly toasted tortillas and quesadillas. How unusual to first discover a great restaurant (Lares), which is an unpretentious local place, at a catered meal for 75 people, in Brentwood, CA. Go figure. I must assert that the food served in the restaurant is even BETTER than the fresh catered meal. And more variety, of course. So, drop what you are doing right know and go immediately to Lares and enjoy the best Mexican food of your life. Outstanding Margaritas, too. Delish! I promise.

Best Brisket

Marv’s is a small, one-man&woman operation, local Deli that has been open for 55 years. I eat here regularly, not only because Marv serves absolutely the BEST brisket sandwich in the world, but because I want ALSO to support good little mom-and-pop neighborhood businesses like this one so that they don’t fold in the shadow of such corporate mediocrity as a Jerry’s Famous Deli.

Marv’s is totally no frills simple and basic old-style neighborhood deli; the hot sandwiches and home made soups to die for. The decor is original 1950s, having never been remodeled, including the checkerboard linoleum floor. Marv and his wife do it all, themselves, every day (except Sunday, I think). But, be aware that they close at 6:00 pm and are never open later, so it is lunch or grab an early sandwich on the way home from work. Well worth the effort.

I am not kidding about the brisket. His slow-cooked meats (brisket, pastrami, corned beef) are superb. I am particularly partial to the brisket (can you tell?). Mouth watering melt-in-your-mouth succulent brisket piled high on real Jewish rye, with side of potato salad or yummy slaw and two delish dill pickle quarters. AND, the sandwich is only $9.50! A bargain. Simple, delicious, beautiful! Go. Now.
