Service was horrible when we went, the food preparation was mediocre at best and there are a LOT of other great places on Geary to eat at that are close by (Parc Hong Kong, Mayflower, even Lucky Fortune). If the food was bearable, I’d forgive the bad service since that is what I expect at most Chinese restaurants.

Had the kaiseki meal and everything was done very artfully and tastefully. I had the Early Summer 07 menu, which rotates about every 6 weeks to a different menu, to keep things fresh and interesting. The sake zuki was excellent, especially the flounder marinated in kelp with caviar. The agemono was so so, as I was expecting sea bass (even if it was Japanese sea bass) to have a smoother texture than the one we had. The sashimi assortment, grilled dish and dessert were fantastic, however, making the overall experience very worthwhile. Very pricey (at $97/person) but worth a try!

Good old home-style Chinese cooking and at a price you can afford. Get the crispy fried won tons as an appetizer to share. The soft scrambled egg over hor fun with shrimp or beef is my favorite there, as is the won ton soup. But beware if you have an aversion to MSG. They use it in the soup stock, which otherwise, would have pushed it to 5 stars if they didn’t.

If you have a craving for all things fishy, then this is THE place to come to. Who cares about Blowfish, Ebisu and all the others in the city when you got Roger’s blend of traditional and more hip style rolls and sushi. The fish is extremely fresh, the presentation is very well thought out and he prepares it all with the best ingredients. Fresh uni? He’ll crack open that sucker and if don’t smell right, he’ll toss it in the garbage and not serve you otherwise. Spiny tail lobster from Australia? Special order it for a special occasion! Soft shell crabs? He’ll bring them out and let them crawl around before their inevitable fate into your stomach. Oh, and did I mention lamp chops? Special order it from Roger and you’ll be glad you did. I can go on and on but this place beats everything else hands out except for the time I went to the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo for sashimi off the boat…literally.

This is one of the best French-style bakeries in the city (there are others like the one in Cole Valley). The croissants as mentioned below are awesome as is the bread pudding. Yummmmmm…. And the Gougere with gruyere cheese and fresh herbs….c’est magnifique! The lineups are usually a turnoff but patience will reward you as I don’t think there’s anything off on the menu at all. The pastries are a must if you’re visiting…the Lemon Cream Tart. I’m getting hungry again….
