Al Fresco Italian

I ate in their patio on a perfect Friday afternoon. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here. The service was excellent, valet parking wasn’t too bad for $8, and I did not have to wait to get a table. Their pastas were very good.

What I ate:
  • Dxm8tikmkr3lfzaby-gaa780x80
    ****

The homemade gnocchi was veryvery good. I usually like gnocchi to be fluffy and not dense. This place had such fluffy gnocchi to die for. I just wished the sauce wasn’t so salty. But overall the gnocchi with a tomato creams sauce w/ porcini mushrooms, pancetta, and Italian sausage was good.

  • Asm4aakmor3jbcaby-gaa780x80
    **

    It was a little dry.

  • *****

I really like this spicy penne dish. It was perfectly al dente.

  • Cgtuqukmkr3lnqaby-gaa780x80
    ***

The fried calamari should have had a crispier outside.

Merle's Barbecue & Southern Kitchen

Jul 4, 2007 Link

Decent BBQ

Merle’s is suppose to be an Evanston institution. It’s a decent place for BBQ but I found the meat a little dry. I think they are better known for their rubs but I typically like mine with bbq sauce. The service was very good and the prices very reasonable but the food could definitely be better.

What I ate:
  • Benea4kmor3kv6aby-gaa880x80
    ***

It was a little dry so I had to slather on the bbq sauce myself. But this is a lot of food for a decent price.

  • Cwcziukmor3lfzaby-gaa780x80
    ***

A lot of meat but yet again a little dry.

Love it!

I had such a good experience here. The decor is trendy, the food is amazing, and the drinks delicious. I loved the yucca rolls they give you to start off. The food here was very flavorful and delicious. I would definitely come back.

What I ate:
  • Coffx-fkir3i4vaby-gaa780x80
    *****

I really really liked this appetizer because the fish was refreshing and tasty. Plus they serve it in a cute mini-taco holder.

  • Ccwam6fkir3i6waby-gaa780x80
    *****

The scallops were very tender and very tasty.

  • C1anvmfkir3khcaby-gaa880x80
    ***

The halibut was good but not stellar. I thought the sauce was bland but the fish was very fresh.

  • *****

The beef was very tender and full of flavor. I highly recommend it.

  • *****

This is a mint mojito with fresh watermelon crushed in it. It’s very yummy!

El Barco Mariscos

Love the Red Snapper!

The whole red snapper is awesome here! The deep fried fish is giant and flavorful. I got it with garlic and grilled onions and I couldn’t have asked for more. I shared this with a friend and I was glad I did since it’s so big. I just wish the service was a little faster.

What I ate:
  • Cdqa3wd-ir3ifkaby-gaa780x80
    *****

Awesome! Lots of flavor and I love the texture since it’s crispy on the outside and soft and flaky on the inside.

Goose Island Shrimp House

May 14, 2007 Link

Hole in the Wall Shrimp Joint

This place makes great fried shrimp and other fried seafood. You can get fried oysters, clams, scallops, catfish, jumbo shrimp, mushrooms and even FROG LEGS! This place is only for pick-up. There’s not even a place to sit down but if you’re in the area and craving some fried shrimp, I would definitely recommend it. It’s not in the best neighborhood and parking isn’t so great either but the breading/batter is flavorful and crispy and their regular shrimp is giant (I can only wonder how big the jumbo shrimp are like). You can try their mild or hot sauce with it. You’ll need more than one container of the sauce b/c you’ll want to dunk your shrimp. It’s a no frills bargain.

Much Better this Time Around

My follow-up review for this restaurant. Read my previous review for this restaurant here

I went back here with my co-workers and the service was much better this time. I think if it weren’t so hard to find parking and the uncomfortable tables, I would give it 5 stars b/c the food is so good.

What I ate:
  • Cop1ze3yyr24s0aby-gaa880x80
    *****

This was VERY good. It’s not normally on the menu but I’ve tried two of their daily special risottos and I haven’t been disappointed.

  • *****

This is by far the BEST homemade gnocchi I’ve had. It’s the lightest and fluffiest gnocchi and the heavier gorgonzola sauce is the perfect complement.

VIP Restaurant

Mar 30, 2007 Link

Best Invention for Noodles

VIP is a small and cheap Chinese restaurant on the northside of town. I only reason why I came to this place is for the Jja Jang Bbong. They give you both Jja Jang Myun (noodles w/ black bean sauce) and Jjam Bbong (noodles w/ spicy seafood soup) in this awesome split bowl.

What I ate:
  • D1elwc3w0r25i4aby-gaa880x80
    ****

The jja jang myun was a bit too salty (should have had more sweetness) but the jjam bbong was great! The jjam bbong soup was spicy and oh so good.

  • C5hfro3w0r25o7aby-gaa780x80
    *****

Very crispy and delicious meat pieces with a very good sweet and sour sauce. Ask for the sauce on the side so that the fried meat stays cripsy.

Kuhn's Delicatessen

Mar 24, 2007 Link

Traditional German

Kuhn’s is a grocery with a cafe in the back. It’s a casual dining atmosphere with a friendly staff (the service is a little slow though). The food is very good and the portions HUGE. I really enjoyed the spaetzle (noodles). Next time I really want to try the potato pancakes and the sausage platter.

What I ate:
  • ****

The goulash was very thick and flavorful. Huge chunks of tender beef with the spaetzle was delicious. The spaetzle was thick, chewy, and soft. The slightly sweet red cabbage was the perfect complement to the salty goulash.

  • ****

The chicken schnitzel was perfectly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. You have to ask for this gravy (I can’t recall the name) to eat with the chicken and spaetzle.

  • *****

I loved this dessert! It had a perfect layer of a berry jam/preserve and the streusel on top was slightly crispy.

Wishbone on Lincoln

Mar 17, 2007 Link

Awesome Desserts

Wishbone is a great place for desserts. They had so many good choices and I did not regret both of the ones that I tried. I felt bad that we only came in to get dessert but the server was so nice about it. I would definitely go back to try some of their main dishes. (Oh. I even liked the corn muffins that they gave us).

What I ate:
  • ****

The bread pudding with the caramel sauce was very good. The portion is huge. I just wished the bread pudding was a little more mushy.

  • ****

The chocolate and pecan blended well together. It wasn’t too nutty and it wasn’t too chocolaty. I liked the fact that the ice cream came in a separate bowl so that it doesn’t melt all over the warm pie.

  • ***

The crab cakes were average. I wish it was more flaky and the sauce was more flavorful.

Cream Puffs

I’ve been wanting to try out this place for a while and I finally got a chance to stop by for dessert. I thought this place was so cute. There are a couple of stools for you to enjoy your cream puff and look out the window for some good people watching (especially being next door to Joe’s). The cream puffs were freshly made so it was sooooooo good.

What I ate:
  • Czuly0y2ar242daby-gaa880x80
    *****

The “puff” part was freshly baked that day so it was very light and flaky. The “cream” part was sweet and gooey but not sugar-shockingly sweet.
