Decent BBQ

Merle’s is suppose to be an Evanston institution. It’s a decent place for BBQ but I found the meat a little dry. I think they are better known for their rubs but I typically like mine with bbq sauce. The service was very good and the prices very reasonable but the food could definitely be better.

Dishes I tried:

Slow Smoked Combo

It was a little dry so I had to slather on the bbq sauce myself. But this is a lot of food for a decent price.

A lot of meat but yet again a little dry.

Al Fresco Italian

I ate in their patio on a perfect Friday afternoon. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here. The service was excellent, valet parking wasn’t too bad for $8, and I did not have to wait to get a table. Their pastas were very good.

Dishes I tried:

Gnocchi al Bosciola

  • 4.0 star rating
  •
  •
  •
  •
  •

The homemade gnocchi was veryvery good. I usually like gnocchi to be fluffy and not dense. This place had such fluffy gnocchi to die for. I just wished the sauce wasn’t so salty. But overall the gnocchi with a tomato creams sauce w/ porcini mushrooms, pancetta, and Italian sausage was good.

I really like this spicy penne dish. It was perfectly al dente.

The fried calamari should have had a crispier outside.

Love it!

I had such a good experience here. The decor is trendy, the food is amazing, and the drinks delicious. I loved the yucca rolls they give you to start off. The food here was very flavorful and delicious. I would definitely come back.

Dishes I tried:

Blue Marlin Tacos

I really really liked this appetizer because the fish was refreshing and tasty. Plus they serve it in a cute mini-taco holder.

The halibut was good but not stellar. I thought the sauce was bland but the fish was very fresh.

Love the Red Snapper!

The whole red snapper is awesome here! The deep fried fish is giant and flavorful. I got it with garlic and grilled onions and I couldn’t have asked for more. I shared this with a friend and I was glad I did since it’s so big. I just wish the service was a little faster.

Awesome! Lots of flavor and I love the texture since it’s crispy on the outside and soft and flaky on the inside.

Much Better this Time Around

My follow-up review for this restaurant. Read my previous review for this restaurant here

I went back here with my co-workers and the service was much better this time. I think if it weren’t so hard to find parking and the uncomfortable tables, I would give it 5 stars b/c the food is so good.

Dishes I tried:

Risotto with Chicken, Sun Dried Tomatoes, Mushrooms, Broccoli

  • 5.0 star rating
  •

  •
  •

This was VERY good. It’s not normally on the menu but I’ve tried two of their daily special risottos and I haven’t been disappointed.

Gnocchi with Gorgonzola Sauce

  • 5.0 star rating

This is by far the BEST homemade gnocchi I’ve had. It’s the lightest and fluffiest gnocchi and the heavier gorgonzola sauce is the perfect complement.

Best Invention for Noodles

VIP is a small and cheap Chinese restaurant on the northside of town. I only reason why I came to this place is for the Jja Jang Bbong. They give you both Jja Jang Myun (noodles w/ black bean sauce) and Jjam Bbong (noodles w/ spicy seafood soup) in this awesome split bowl.

Dishes I tried:

Jja Jang Bbong

  • 4.0 star rating

The jja jang myun was a bit too salty (should have had more sweetness) but the jjam bbong was great! The jjam bbong soup was spicy and oh so good.

Very crispy and delicious meat pieces with a very good sweet and sour sauce. Ask for the sauce on the side so that the fried meat stays cripsy.

Cream Puffs

I’ve been wanting to try out this place for a while and I finally got a chance to stop by for dessert. I thought this place was so cute. There are a couple of stools for you to enjoy your cream puff and look out the window for some good people watching (especially being next door to Joe’s). The cream puffs were freshly made so it was sooooooo good.

Dishes I tried:

Original Vanilla Cream Puff

  • 5.0 star rating
  •
  •
  •
  •
  •

The “puff” part was freshly baked that day so it was very light and flaky. The “cream” part was sweet and gooey but not sugar-shockingly sweet.

New York Pizza at its Best

This place is pretty famous as the typical New York pizzeria. The thin crust pizzas are so good here. There’s a line out the door and you can barely find a corner to eat your pizza but this place is worth it.

Dishes I tried:

Cheese Pizza

  • 4.0 star rating

Yum! The crust is perfect. I just wish that they put a little more tomato sauce.

Sausage Pizza

The sausage is so flavorful and oh so good. At first I thought it strange that they put slices of sausage on top of the pizza but I didn’t care when I started eating it because it was so good.

NYC Institution

I love Carnegie Deli. I always stop by here every time I am in New York. It’s always busy and crowded and you’re elbow to elbow with strangers near you but it’s all worth it for the delicious sandwiches. The walls are filled with pictures of celebrities and it’s so loud and crazy in there that you can barely settle down. Even though the atmosphere is hectic, the service is still good. They have me hooked on their pastrami, corned beef, and desserts.

Warning: Do not try to eat anything by yourself. A normal person cannot finish the sandwiches. You know it’s serious business when you see two men sharing a sandwich. :-)

Dishes I tried:

Ah, There's the Reuben [hot pastrami]

The pastrami was so tender and flavorful. It just melted in my mouth. I love the swiss cheese, sauerkraut, rye bread, and mustard with the sandwich.

I typically do not like corned beef but at this place, I am a corned beef fan. It’s very tender, juicy, and flavorful.

You cannot possibly finish this dessert by yourself. All their pies are GIANT. This pie was very delicious. I liked the crust and the fluffy cream on top.
