Doc Chey's
Feb 21, 2008
delicious Asian food
Doc Chey’s is not exactly Chinese, and not exactly Thai, and not exactly Japanese. They offer dishes inspired from several different Asian countries. They offer dishes in the “stir fry”, “noodle” and “Doc’s Favorites” (also known as miscellaneous) categories. For each dish, you can choose between chicken, shrimp, beef, tofu, or vegetables. I usually stick with the chicken, which is nicely seasoned and well prepared — not just breaded and fried.
Unfortunately, I feel I must deduct one star from the five I would like to give them for service. At times service is perfect. The last time I was there, my meal arrived before the appetizer. Some times they are slow to take your order, leaving you wondering if you have a server. Despite that, I will be back.
One last note: Doc Chey’s is on the “east” side of I85 (next Circuit City and Whole Foods). The map is currently showing it on the wrong side.

spicy orange with chicken
My favorite on the menu. Just the right amount of spice (but they will make dishes milder on request). It is not deep fried as some other restaurants serve chicken. I’m sure it is still fried, just not quite so much. This dish is considered a “stir fry” on the menu.
Purple Onion
Dec 2, 2007
nice resturant, nice town
We had heard about the Purple Onion before, but this was our first time eating there and in fact our first visit to the mountain town of Saluda, NC. Our dinner was fantastic. We ate inside, although they do have an outdoor patio. It appeared to be reserved for a group dinner the night we were there. After dinner we had a nice stroll on Main St. before heading to the car for the ride home.

Fuel Pizza Cafe

pizza across from the convention center
This location is just across College Street from the Charlotte Convention Center. I had pizza by the slice and some garlic knots for lunch. They were quite good. My table was next to a vintage fuel pump. For whole pizzas, menu choices include the standards as well as other combinations like spinach/ricotta/tomato, Cajun, and Buffalo chicken. Fuel Pizza Cafe has several locations around Charlotte.
Moe's Southwest Grill
Sep 23, 2007
waiter, there's a fly buzzing over the salsa
In general, I like Moe’s. However this particular one often has a few houseflies buzzing around inside the restaurant. Last time I was there, there were several fruit flies hovering over the salsa bar. I left without eating my meal. Unfortunately I had already paid for it. The salsa bar was just too much. The restaurant still has an “A” rating (top level) from the health department (as of last time I was there). I still enjoy eating at other Moe’s, just not that one.
UPDATE: Feb 2008. I have been back and saw no sign of flys. It was at a slow time (~2pm) and the employees were cleaning — and not just mopping the floor. They were even wiping down the sides of the drink machine. Maybe I just caught this place at a bad day.
The Parson's Table
Sep 23, 2007
dinner in a 19th century church building
I found the Parson’s Table while browsing for a restaurant near Myrtle Beach, where we were on vacation. The building is a 19th century church with several stained glass windows (on interior walls) collected by the owner. There is a small bar at the front and several small dining rooms. We started with she crab soup that was very good and a house salad. I had the Sesame Seared Salmon, and my wife had a lobster tail. We finished sharing a delicious piece of chocolate pecan pie.

Sesame Seared Salmon
The salmon was good. The dish had an Asian feel with pickled ginger on top.

lobster tail
the lobster tail was a little tougher than expected

Soby's

we waited an hour _with_ a reservation
I have eaten there several times. It used to be a favorite, but last time we were there we had to wait for an hour past the time of our reservation to get our table. On the positive side, the food was always delicious. They have a huge wine selection. If you go, try the white chocolate banana cream pie for desert.

white chocolate banana cream pie
Absolutely delicious! A favoite of mine since the first time I ate at Soby’s. Despite my problem with the wait last time I was there, I am thinking of trying to order a piece for takeout one of these days!
Sassafras Southern Bistro

who knew grits could be so good
Great food, great atmosphere, great service. Sassafras is located next to Piazza Bergamo in downtown Greenville SC. They have seats outside for when the weather is nice. I recommend anything on the menu. The wine selection is extensive. Several dishes come with grits as a starch.

pimento cheese fondue & hand-cut chips
Delicious appetizer. Perfect for sharing. The potato chips are crunchy and great for dipping in the cheese.
Barley's Taproom and Pizzeria
Sep 19, 2007
good pizza, good beer
Barley’s has great pizzas with a wide variety of toppings available. Good beers if you are willing to try something less common (they do not have the major brands). Service is never fast, so it is not the best choice if you are in a hurry. If you have the time, the food is great!
Brick Street Café

try the sweet potato cake
I had the tomato dill soup, the “Land and Sea” and both were good. Restaurant decorations are a bit eccentric. For desert I strongly recommend the sweet potato cake. You can ask for the cake “to-go” if you did not save room.

Land and Sea
Fillet mignon was excellent. Crab cake was ok.

Sweet Potato Cake
Delicious! The sweet potato is a subtle flavor in the cake. Very sweet—you may want a glass of milk to go with it.
