Off the beaten path but worth the trip!

I thought this place was really great. I was there a couple of months ago so forgive me if I am not as detailed as usual but I can tell you, the chefs really out do themselves with this menu. It is changed seasonally and they grow their own vegetables and herbs in the back of the hotel! I am not quite sure how family friendly it is as they only have 8 tables or so in the main dining room and it is very small. They do have an indoor patio that was built on to the restaurant but if it is cold or the weather is bad I would not want to sit there. If you are looking for a 5 star meal made from local ingredients from chefs who have a true passion for food then this is your place.

AMAZING Nuevo Latino food!

I checked this place out a couple of weeks ago and I thought it was WELL WORTH reviewing!

When you walk in the door of this restaurant you can’t help but feel welcomed. The warm paint colors splashed all over the walls and the waterfall next to the decorated bar made me excited to see what the menu had to offer. We sat down in a round booth and were greeted immediately with bread and water. Then I looked at the menu….You can say that I was extremely excited to see what the food was like because it was all described deliciously on the menu.

We decided to start off with the trio of oysters and a pair of oyster shooters. The oysters were kind of pricey and I actually enjoyed the cheapest of the three the best. They were served with a champagne mango mignonette that was one of the best I have ever had!

To go with our oysters we each picked 2 drinks, I had the Caipirosa de Fresa with fresh strawberries, vodka, muddled limes and sugar and my boyfriend had the Caipirihna, Brazil’s classic drink, with rum, muddled limes, sugar and freshly squeezed lime juice, garnished with a stick of sugar cane (the real deal!). We were both pretty impressed.

Then we went with the trio of empanadas (we had a hard time choosing one of anything because everything looked so good!). The fillings were duck, beef, and shrimp filled inside a flaky pastry shell and fried. My favorite was the duck but they were all tasty!

Then we went on to our entrees which were amazing (I know that I have said that many times now, but I truly believe it!). I had the Pan seared tilapia with yucca crust and corn and lobster cream sauce. It was a perfect balance of salty and sweet with the crust of the fish and the creamy corn & lobster sauce. I would highly recommend it! My boyfriend ordered the Churrasco a la Parrilla which was grilled skirt steak with stir fried rice with sweet plantain and lobster and a DELICIOUS braised garlic mojito sauce. If your mouth is watering, it should be! It was perfectly cooked medium rare but the sauce that it was paired with was the perfect accompaniment to the seasoned meat. The fried rice was nothing to sneeze at either.

Needless to say, this restaurant was EXACTLY what the Promenade Shops needed, a beautiful delicious restaurant that I can honestly say was one of the best meals that I have had in the valley!!

The best pizza that I have had in the valley!

I can say that this place knows how to make pizza! I was so excited when I tasted the first slice, it was cooked perfectly, had a thin crust, delicious sauce, and the perfect amount of cheese! Am I making you hungry? Well, just the thought of this pizza makes my mouth water! If you love pizza as much as I do, you will want to stop in this place.

I would have definitely given 5 stars but I am bothered by the fact that they dont deliver. But well worth it anyway! I honestly dont think that anyone can tell me that they have had a better piece of pizza in the area!

Pickles Steakhouse

Jan 14, 2008 Link

Good steakhouse right in my backyard!

I thought that this place was great. I was greated and served by friendly people and the meal just started off so pleasant. What a nice surprise, pickles were brought to my table as soon as we sat down, I would have never guessed…LOL!

We both ordered steak. NY Strip is my favorite cut and it was great. It says something when a steakhouse knows how to cook a steak to the proper temperature. And the flavors that they marinated the steak in before grilling were great!

I love steak, it is one of my favoite things to order, but unfortunately as much as I hated it, I had to go to overpriced Outback to get a decent piece of meat…NOT ANYMORE! I recommend Pickles any day of the week!

Palace of India Restaurant

Not the best Indian food...

My boyfriend and I have been a fan of Indian food for a while and it was a treat when I saw one right in Emmaus. We went one Saturday night a couple of weeks ago and I was amazed to see how many people were in there…NONE!

That should have been my first hint to turn around and go somewhere else but I thought that I would give it a shot.

The prices were so overpriced. I have had way better Indain food in Philadelphia for way less then the meal that I had here.

Now I cant say that all of the food was horrible. The problem was that the portions were sooo small which is unusual for Indian restaurants and the quality was just not there for the prices that they were charging. I think that they were trying to make up for the fact that they had no customers on a weekend.

It is unfortunate, but I guess I will have to find another Indian restaurant in the Valley.

C L Checker's Pub & Restaurant

Not the greatest service in Allentown...

When you see this restaurant from Airport Rd, it looks very appealing. The smell coming out of the restaurant was intoxicating so we decided to try the food. When walking into the restaurant, there was no one to greet us so we were very confused by where to go. Finally we walked up the stairs to see the restaurant, where again, there was no one to greet us. After standing at the hostess table for a few minutes and contemplating leaving, a waiter came to greet us and sat us at a table.

The restaurant was very nice, cozy fireplace in the middle of all the tables, wood ceilings, and medieval art on the walls. We thought it was very warm.

Even after looking at the menu we thought the meal would be good. I would have to say that it was only sub-par. The server told us that he was new after taking our order and was very confused by the things on the menu. We ordered the French Onion soup, which is one of my faves, and the soup of the day which was Potatoe & Cheese. After waiting for 5 minutes, a server comes over with my soup but no potato. Quickly after that our server came over and told us that there was no more potato soup and he was sorry. Granted, it was only 5:45 on my watch so I am not sure how they ran out of the “Soup of the Day”. If that was the case the server should have told us so that my bf could have had time to order something else before my soup came out.

EVERYTHING was underseasoned that I put in my mouth. Especially the French Onion Soup, it was some of the blandest soup that I ever had. Then the entrees come. I ordered the filet and schrimp scampi and my bf ordered filet, ribs, and crab cake combo since the restaurant is supposed to be famous for crab cakes and ribs. I would have to say that they went a little over board by saying “Famous”! My take on this restaurant is that they are pricey for only sub-par food. The waiter said that our entrees were supposed to come with a veg of the day which was supposed to be carrots but when the plates came out there was a dish of vegetables that still today I am unsure of what they were, none the less, they were GROSS. But the point being, the waiter didnt even know what they were! They have a menu that could be great but I am not sure that the kitchen knows what they are doing, and as for the service, it was rather terrible!

What I ate:
  • *

Some of the worst Onion Soup ever, there was no seasoning in it at all!

  • ***

The Filet was cooked to medium rare which is how I like it but I had to shake the salt on it mulitple times because again, it was very underseasoned! The scampi was nothing but butter with barely any garlic, and again, no seasoning! Atleast the steak was cooked to temperature though!

  • ***

This dish was WAY OVERPRICED! The filet was ok. The ribs were ok as well, but the BBQ sauce was definitely out of a bottle! And as for these “Famous crabcakes”, I think that the only thing that they should be famous for is being underseasoned. I didnt even know crab cakes could be bland! The highlight of this dish was the waffle fries which were excellent and the only part of the meal that had any salt or pepper on it!

Bethlehem Brew Works

Nov 7, 2007 Link

The name says it all.

It is a brew works, so of course they have beer, and a large assortment at that. My boyfriend tried the sampler and had a tremendous amount of beer served to him for only $8. He seemed to like most of them. Now he has had samplers at other breweries and I will have to say the only down side to the sampler at BBW was that there was no card saying what each beer was. I stuck with martinis, priced about right with good taste! Now our reason for stopping was we had an hour to kill before our dinner reservations and we wanted a quick bite with some drinks…BOY, did we make a mistake with our order! We decided to go simple and get the sipnach artichoke dip with our drinks to snack on while we waited…and it was DISGUSTING! DO NOT ORDER IT! I have heard that other items on their menu are ok, but this was just inedible. I am not sure what they were thinking.

What I ate:

ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE! I wouldnt order that again if it was free and they were giving it away…it was really that bad!

Fogo de Chao

Unbelievable Brazilian Steakhouse!!

This restaurant has blown it out of the water for me everytime that I have eaten here! You walk into an elegant and sophisticated restaurant in the heart of downtown Philadelphia. The walls are lined with hundreds of bottles of wine that they use as decoration. The salad bar that you pass as you are seated in the middle of the restaurant is ok, but trust me, you arent going there to nibble on salads and cheeses. It is an all you can eat buffet (if you can even call it that) of deliciously cooked meats that are melt in your mouth. There are multiple servers for every table that tend to your every whim and have more personality then you know what to do with. The meats at this place are so amazing due to the way that they cook them. They roast every piece of meat on metal skewers over an open fire that they then come to your table and cut table side for you. They also place 3 side dishes on your table for your enjoyment to eat with the array of meats that come to your table. Every diner is served with a round disc consisting of one side that is red and one side that is green. As long as your disc is turned to the green side, there is a plentiful bounty of meat that is served to you. The menu features unlimited servings of 15 different delectable cuts of fire-roasted meats. If you are a lover of meat as I am, you will be truly blessed to walk in the doors of Fogo de Chao!

Awesome Italian Food for a chain restaurant!

I also love this place. I think that the atmosphere is great whether you are out on a romantic date or for an elegant meal with friends. They serve you unbelievable olive oil as a starter. I love the cracked pepper and spices that they provide you with! They have a good wine selection and the menu is pretty good too! The servers are always friendly and I am always a fan of having to see first hand what goes on in the kitchen (a clear wall is all that is between the line cooks and the diners.

This dish is so good here that I find myself ordering it every time I come. The chicken is cooked perfectly and the marsala sauce is always perfectly seasoned. I also LOVE the garlic mashed potatoes that they serve on the side! I think that you can get that with other dishes as well. If you can, I suggest!

Tortilla Flat Restaurant

Sep 11, 2007 Link

Not a Mexican Fiesta...

I really was not fond of this place. Mexican food is on the top of my list for favorite cuisines…but this place just did not hold up to standards. The place looked hopeful. It was a nice “hole in the wall” restaurant in the middle of Main St. in Bethlehem and I thought they would have done much better. The ambiance was good and the decor was eclectic. First, the service was terrible. They have about 25 tables throughout the restaurant scattered between 2 rooms and only 2 servers waiting on tables. The portions of the food were also pretty dismal. Don’t eat here if you are starving! They started the meal off with a free bowl of chips and dip, as most Mexican restaurants do. I say free, because I would have paid them to take it off my table. It tasted like they opened a CAN of diced tomatos and put them in a bowl next to stale tortilla chips out of a bag. The rest of the meal was honestly not much better. The fun of Mexican food is the heat and seasonings that makes it’s way through almost every dish. The name on the restaurant is very appropriate…FLAT!
