People watch and chat outdoors

Borrone’s is a trendy coffee shop that anyone who grew up on the peninsula has probably been to at least once. There’s tons of outdoor seating and a good number of tables inside as well. It’s located on El Camino right between Kepler’s bookstore and the BBC pub.

They have a decent menu for a cafe…all of the standard coffees, teas, & italian sodas plus various food specials that seem to change everytime I’m there. I’ve tried a few of the sandwiches and they were pretty good. They also have some yummy looking desserts.

This is a nice place to go to catch up with friends for a few hours. Students also come here to study, though I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re looking for a quiet study environment. This is probably the busiest cafe in Menlo Park and a fun place to people watch. Another plus is that the staff they hire are usually fairly attractive. =)

Japanese + Korean in one

For some reason, there are tons of Japanese restaurants in downtown San Mateo. Kyoto has decent sushi and enough seating that even big groups can be seated immediately.

I usually order a bento box…your choice of two items: sashimi, chicken teriyaki, salmon teriyaki, chicken katsu, and more. I always choose the sashimi (6 pieces of salmon, tuna, and hamachi) and salmon teriyaki. The bento also comes with miso soup, rice, and salad.

They also have a good selection of Korean food. My coworkers like to order the bibimbap. If you order any of the Korean entrees, they’ll also bring you a few plates of kimchee.

The staff there is always very friendly, but if they’re very busy it can take them a while to bring out all of a party’s food.

A nice filling lunch with a little bit of everything: miso soup, rice, salad, & a choice of 2 entrees.

Great Mexican with free chips & salsa

This is a great, casual Mexican restaurant in San Carlos. They have all the standard Mexican food selections with your choice of meat: burritos, tacos, fajitas, etc. I’ve only tried the tacos & burritos, but they were very tasty.

My favorite part about this restaurant is the endless supply free chips & salsa. It’s all set up on a table near the register, so you never have to flag down a waiter to get a refill on chips. They have a few different types of free salsa…my personal favorite is the pico de gallo. It’s just a little spicy, but the tomatoes and other ingredients are always very fresh.

This restaurant has plenty of seating in 4 person booths and a couple bigger tables. The staff there is always very friendly and the food is ready very quickly.

Tasty Fancy Vietnamese food

This isn’t your typical Vietnamese pho place…this restaurant is fancier and more expensive. They have a great selection of spring rolls with all kinds of ingredients: Ahi Tuna Rolls, Spider Rolls, Duck Rolls, Traditional Spring Rolls, etc. I only tried the Summer Rolls (Dungeness crab, avocado, cucumber, ginger soy) and I can’t wait to go back to try the others.

The portions are not huge, but everything we ordered that night was very good. I highly recommend the Steamed Chilean Sea Bass!

All in all, this is a good place to go for a nice dinner or on a date. It’s somewhat hidden in an alley, so make sure you check a map before you go.

Tender steamed chilean sea bass with fresh ginger, lily buds, & shiitake mushrooms. This dish wasn’t very big, but it tasted very good!
