Work Of Art Cakes
Feb 11, 2007
Artful Work
From the outside, it is hard to even tell that this little bakery is ever open, but for those who are in the know, it’s a great find! I worked around the corner from the shop and found myself visiting it almost every other day. Apparently, Work of Art used to have a few tables set up for dining in, but now it is only carryout.
Besides baking beautiful and tasty pastries, Work of Art also sells lunch daily. There is always a satisfying soup of the day and fresh salads with home made dressings. But my lunch time favorite was always a warm sandwich. You can choose from several freshly made breads and get sliced hot meat with all the fixings! They put it through a little toaster first to get everything nice and melty.
The shop is owned by a very nice woman who could always tell that my stomach was in need of a free chocolate truffle sample! YUM!

The Mango Room

Lacking Something
I was hoping for a new tasty restaurant to write about, but this place did not leave me much to say.. The cuisine was Caribbean/Southern which sounds like it could be really tasty. I had a cornmeal fried chicken with a side of mac and cheese and green beans. The beans were out of a can and cooked in a way that made it difficult to eat. The mac and cheese came in a wedge and was something other than cheesy. The saving grace was the fried chicken which was juicy and hot.
If you go, stick with the chicken and try the green bean bundles which are green beans fried tempura style. Tasty.. I hear the rice and beans are good too.
I also hear they have a decent happy hour.

Pizza 51

Good, but not great
In pursuit of the best in KC, we stumbled upon Pizza 51. A refurbished gas station still equipped with garage doors that open in the summer time and a large open patio. The pizza itself was large and tasty but it seemed a tad undercooked and there was a bit too much sauce, which was… a little bitter. I would eat it again, and it was definitely better than most of the pizza I’ve tried here, but it’s still not New York! Luckily, they sell beer too!

The Fort Restaurant
Dec 6, 2006
Elk Anyone?
We recently visited The Fort on Thanksgiving for a feast fit for… a barbarian. OK, maybe not quite so extreme but the menu items were those that could be found on a table of a skilled hunter. My father got the game plate, which had a sample of elk, buffalo and quail, all of which tasted excellent and not very gamy. My fiance tried the prime rib of buffalo, it was huge and cooked a perfect medium rare. I had the traditional thanksgiving dinner which was just so-so.. the turkey was a bit dry and everything else a bit thick.
The atmosphere was the best part about the evening. The restaurant is set high on a hill overlooking the twinkling lights of Denver. The building itself was actually in the shape of a fort, (gift shop included.) On special occasions the waiters sing a song and carry out a large headdress that they gently place on your head. Then they take a picture and post it on their web site for everyone to get a giggle… so check out their gallery at thefort.com.
So, if you visit The Fort, take my advice, be brave, be bold, and try something with antlers.

Pastry Goddess

Great Goddess of Goodies!
I actually visited the brand new storefront of the Pastry Goddess in Briarcliff Village. It’s a nice little cafe, very clean and friendly. Their selection was plentiful and the temptation to indulge overcame me. I ended up with a French Silk Pie that was so smooth and creamy—the chocolate part was a delicious fudgey moose and the whipped cream was definitely not out of a can. I also tasted a Créme Brule latte that was downright nummy and it was incredibly hard to choose when the list of lattes carried the names of all my favorite desserts. A return to this toothsome eatery is in my future and should be in yours.

Sharp's 63rd St Grill

Happy at happy hour
Sharp’s is a popular joint in Brookside. We heard from friends that they had some pretty great happy hour specials and they were right! We went on Wednesday and split a $3 pizza and had some $2.50 drafts. The pizza was tasty with a nice, thick crust and the whole meal came out to be less than 10 dollars! I will write another review when we go for a full meal. I hear their brunch is pretty good too!

Bo Ling's

Dim Sum in Kansas City??!!
Believe it or not, there is decent Chinese food in Kansas City and you can find it at Bo-Lings’s. We went for dim sum at exactly 11am, (the opening time on Saturdays) and they gave us a buzzer thingy and told us there would be a short wait! It was worth the 5 minutes, because the food was hot and fresh and there was a nice selection. Just don’t be pushed around, like many cart driven dim sum restaurants, they get you in, feed you, and then try to push you out. Stay for some custard and tea!

Oklahoma Joe's BBQ & Catering

Another BBQ winner!
There is just too much great bbq in this city! This restaurant shares space with a Shamrock Gas Station. The locale is peculiar but the food is amazing! Tender ribs, tasty pulled pork and as they claim, “the best french fries in Kansas City”!
I saw this restaurant on the food network and had to try it right away!

Fiorella's Jack Stack Barbeque
Oct 12, 2006
Possibly the best barbecue in Kansas City??!!
It is a subject of big debate here.. so I really can’t take sides quite yet… but it is definitely up there with the best! Jack Stack is not your typical dingy, bbq joint that serves up awesome brisket. It’s a nice chain of bbq restaurants in Kansas City that serves up awesome everything! I think their ribs are the best so give them a try!
-
Beef Back Ribs
These ribs are humongous!!! Two of us shared this dish and there were still leftovers!
-
Hickory Pit Beans
I like to think of myself as pretty knowledgeable when it comes to baked beans… and these are close to the best I’ve ever had. Every spoonful comes with the sweet beans and a chunk of brisket or bacon! Awesooommme.
Cafe Maison

Just like Paris
This is my favorite non-bbq restaurant in KC. The food is so rich and tastes like it’s gourmet, but the prices are very reasonable. The decor is cute french country with mix and match chairs, tables and place settings. This is the kind of place you take your mother when she comes to visit. Only the best!
-
Croque Monsieur
I upgraded to the Croque Madame and I was not disappointed! This sandwich was better than any of the croque madames I tried in France!
-
Crepes
This dish changes daily with the fillings. I had the crepes filled with salmon and peas topped with a white cream sauce. It was amazing!!! So rich and delicious! A must try.
