Fish Grill
May 22, 2009
Quick and reasonably priced fish
Nestled amidst all the other chain restaurants (rubio’s, fatburger, etc), Fish Grill is a somewhat healthier option. It’s basically semi-fast fish. You order at the counter, pick it up then sit wherever. There’s a pretty good selection of fish and they have entrees, sandwiches and also fish and chips. Each one comes with 2 sides – coleslaw and your choice of starch (baked potato, rice, fries). It’s similar to the California Fish Grill that I went to in Irvine.
The fish tastes pretty fresh and it won’t kill your wallet with most things being around $10-12 or less. Nice option if you want to have something better than filet-o-fish from across the street.

Lazy Daisy Cafe

Cute cafe on wilshire
I wouldn’t expect to find a place like this right on wilshire near all the big chains and fast food, but it’s a welcome surprise. They serve all the standard american breakfast & lunch fare – omelettes, burgers, sandwiches etc. Most people seem to opt for the patio seating which they have quite a bit of.
Parking in the area is mostly meter, but they might have a small lot – not sure. I walked there last time.

Vegetarian Sandwich
Above average for a veggie sandwich. It was large and messy. The patty wasn’t a generic veggie burger patty (a good thing) but it fell apart while eating it. I’d order it again.

Library Ale House

Great beer selection, nice patio
Been here a couple of times and haven’t been disappointed yet. There’s a good selection of beers on tap along with some lighter fruitier ones for the ladies. The food is above-average for bar food, but some of the dishes weren’t as satisfying or filling as I would have liked.
There’s a good sized covered patio in the back which is nicer than the bar atmosphere in the front.

Curry House

Diner-quality curry
Curry House has a wide selection of curries and home-style japanese cooking, but the quality here (and the Irvine location) seem a bit too diner-ish for my taste. It’s hard to my finger on it, but it sort of reminds me of the gravy you’d get on your mashed potatoes at a Denny’s. Maybe that’s a bit harsh, but there’s something that doesn’t taste quite right here. I’d rather go to Hurry Curry across the street or Sawtelle Kitchen up the street.

Yogurtland

cheaper pinkberry alternative - still watery
Up til now the only real fro yo options in the area were pinkberry and their crazy high prices. The yogurt is good, but hard to justify w/ those prices.
Now that Yogurtland has opened on the 2nd floor of the sawtelle plaza, all the asian kids have a place to go. And boy do they ever. It was packed when we went. I haven’t seen a line like this at pinkberry in a looong time. I guess the recession has people looking for cheaper yogurt options.
Anyways, the yogurt at yogurtland has always been inferior to pinkberry. Half the flavors usually have a watery consistency so it’s pretty hit or miss. The toppings aren’t quite as fresh as pinkberry or red mango either. BUT, it’s hard to argue w/ the value. It’s prob 50% cheaper but not 50% worse. I’ll probably still go to yogurt land 2 out of 3 times. Just test the flavor you want before you get it to make sure it’s not watery.

KFC

Tried the grilled chicken
I couldn’t resist all the commercials and promotions about the grilled chicken. I had to try it. Not feeling like cooking 1 day I went through the drive through this location on wilshire to pick up some dinner. I’ve never done drive through at a KFC, but it’s not bad. It sorta sucks if the guy in front of you does a huge order though…
Anyways, the grilled chicken is the same price as the fried chicken so you can mix and match your buckets. I opted for the 7 piece drumstick & thigh bucket (mmm, dark meat) with mac & cheese and cole slaw on the side. Normally not healthy, but since it’s grilled it’s ok! Yay!
The first thing I noticed was how shiny the grilled chicken is. I know chicken and dark meat is a bit fattier, but this was pretty darn shiny. The skin charred to a crisp on the thighs and sort of indistinguishable on the drumsticks. The meat was very juicy, tender and had that smoky grilled taste. I think the chicken tasted juicier (oilier?) than the fried chicken. I wonder if they dip it in oil before grilling it. In any case, it was way better than I thought. I thought it was going to be something like supermarket rotissierie chicken, but it was pretty tasty.
I’m more inclined to go back to KFC with this somewhat healthier option now. According to the nutritional facts on the website, there’s only 4 grams of fat per piece (9 for the thigh). Not bad for greasy chicken – hope it’s true :)

Grilled chicken
Juicy with a smokey flavor. The meat is just as tasty, if not tastier than the fried chicken. Skin is charred to a crisp.
-
Cole Slaw
I think I like el pollo loco’s better.
-
Macaroni & Cheese
How do they make it so gosh darn bright? A bit watery for my taste with a weird processed taste, but if i’m eating fast food chicken I’m not really expecting great sides.

The Chapel

Drinking in church
If you’ve ever wanted to drink and get wasted in church, then you should check out the chapel. There’s a good selection of specialty drinks and the regulars. Call to check what the happy hour specials are. I remember getting some interesting martini-type drinks but I can’t remember them (they must have been really good =P).

Serious Pie

Serious, great and tasty
Great pizzas here but the location feels a bit cramped. It’s sort of like an upscale pizza parlor. It has those raised tables where you sit on bar stools and it’s a bit intimate since you might share the table with other diners.
It’s definitely worth a try if you’re a pizza-lover. There are some unique topping combinations.

Cafe Flora

Good enough to make you go veggie
Great veggie places make it so you don’t even miss the meat. This is one of those places. My favorite veggie places don’t try to “pretend” there’s meat with the fake meat stuff. I’ve had meat and what they peddle as meat is not meat. I’d much rather just have them take vegetables and do something wonderful with them.
The ambience is very homey and there’s plenty of seating between the indoor and the enclosed patio. The people are super friendly also. I’d definitely come back here.

The Combo
Odd and strong tasting. Refreshing.

french dip (with portabella mushrooms)
I really enjoyed this french dip. The bread was toasted nicely and the mushrooms were very tasty. I got it with the yam fries which were also great. Mushrooms are a great substitute for meat.

Fantastic Desserts
Urth Caffe has some awesome food and great coffee. I haven’t tried the sandwiches and entrees, but they look pretty popular. I’ve come here a few times for after dinner dessert. The prices are pretty good considering how big and delicious the sweets are (most slices of cake come with 2 slices).
