Great neighborhood bar and restaurant
Annabel Lee has the physical space a neighborhood bar rather than a restaurant, but the food is just great, so at peak time you’ll need to book to get a table or wait… & people do wait, not just because the food is worth it, but because it’s a nice place to have a drink with friends, even when crowded.
The decor is a remembrance of Poe & his poem, but in a 40s setting. Dark, cosy, comfortable, & made all the more so by the piped music of that era. When there is space you can play darts or watch the baseball game.
The beer selection is not wide, but is excellent (we had Resurrection Ale from the tap, which lives up to its name). However, it is the food that draws people from well beyond the tavern’s expected catchment area.
Dishes I tried:
Duck fat fries
Don’t advertise this to your cardiologist, but these are rich and delicious, fried & seasoned to perfection & frighteningly addictive. If you’re with more than two or three people don’t order one serving.
These and the sweet potato fries well illustrate Annabel Lee’s approach—-comfort food that is interesting and a cut above the average.
Sweet potato fries
More like chips than fries, but still fries, these are sweet & crispy, and are also more-ish.
Roasted lamb chops
This was a special the night we ate, and it looked so good four of us ordered it, all requesting rare. They delivered. Cooked to be crusty & crisp on the outside, and tenderly v moist red on the inside, the chops were lightly seasoned on the cooke edges & had a half teaspoon of blue cheese on each: a wonderful combination that gave the lamb plenty of room to show off its flavors.
