Sushi Nozawa

trust me!
so after years and years of wanting to try out the “sushi nazi” and see what he is so famous for, we finally made our way in. the restaurant is TINY! it is very plain – reminds me of a pizza parlor with the typical red chairs, plain tables, plain plain plain tablewear, etc. we arrived pretty late, around 9:15pm (the place closes at 10pm and is not open weekends) and there was no one there.. we sat down and proceeded with the “TRUST ME”
the chef sent over tuna sashimi in ponzu sauce, albacore, toro sushi, yellowtail, halibut, blue crab handrolls, toro handrolls, freshwater eel.. everything was reallly reallly really good. i can definitely say that i am now completely spoiled. the fish was amazing and the rice was soft and warm. i guess when i heard all the “trust me” stuff from other people, i thought that chef nozawa would give us more exotic sushi.. but instead it was just good cuts and quality of the regular stuff i order anyway. i would definitely return!

tastes like grandma's cooking
this place is probably the best Russian restaurant in los angeles. the food is so fresh and so familiar that it feels as though my grandmother is in that kitchen cooking the food.
the restaurant is very quaint and nicely decorated. the wait staff knows the food so thats always good. definitely start with the traditional cucumber and tomato salad. if you like borscht, its supposed to be really great here. i love the potato dumplings and the vareniki dumplings which have meat inside with a little sour cream and butter over the dumplings.
if you want a good, traditional Russian meal like they serve at Russian households, you need to try this place – its fantastic!

Joe's Pizza

honest to god, best pizza i have ever had!
being from the west coast, we dont really “do” pizza well.. i have tried NYC pizza and its wonderful, but then i discovered JOES.
this place is crazy packed at lunchtime but its soo worth it. the two italian brothers that work here remember everyone that comes in and knows what your usual slice is, which i love. the pizza here is super cheap. buy it by the slice or a full pie. its so crispy and good.
i havent eaten here in more than a year though so maybe some things have changed.

Union Oyster House

the tourist place - but worth it.
okay.. so we had to come eat when we visited. we NEEDED the boston clam chowder.. we CRAVED those oysters and lobster, and we were glad we came. even on a weeknight, the wait was super long. this place seems to be packed regularly. we should have called ahead but figured it wouldnt be too bad on a weeknight.. right?
the wait was around 45 min but we had to eat here. america’s first restaurant.. we had to experience it. so we put our names in and walked around right outside for a while. we visited the holocaust memorial and walked around the quincy market which is super close by. then we came back to sit and wait at the bar with our sam adams beer.
when it was time to be seated we were taken all the way up and through the entire restaurant to the top floor in a tiny little booth that looked like it was the same wood from the 1900’s. we ordered clam chowder which was sooo good. i havent had it like this before – so rich and tasty. we also shared a sample of raw oysters which were so cold and buttery. just great.
my boyfriend and i both ordered the maine lobster steamed. we had a great time cracking it open and eating it. it was made perfectly. we washed it down with boston’s own local beer.
i wish i had room to try the legendary boston creme pie, but i was way too stuffed.
of course as visiters to the city, we enjoyed dining in the first restaurant and im sure there are better and cheaper places to eat, we really loved the experience. i can now say that i have eaten and the oldest restaurant in america!.

Sansom Street Oyster House

my mouth waters just thinking about this place
i am a huge seafood girl. this place is beyond good. the oysters are always fresh. i have never had a bad or sour smelling oyster here. the guys are the oyster bar know how to pick and shuck them clean and simple.
you gotta remember only to get oysters in the months that have an “R” in them.. they will be the best then because of the colder climates.. but if you need your oyster fix in the warmer months, be sure to choose the oysters that come furthest from the equator, so anywhere north is good.
if you are craving lobster, dont hold yourself back – but remember to only get it steamed not broiled.. it will be softer and more rich in my opinon. i have tried their swordfish and the tuna, both arent bad. the lobster bisque is really creamy and the clam chowder is thick. this place is just a great all-around fresh oyster bar/seafood restuarant.
good to know: the have great happy hour specials between 5-7pm which is worth if for great oysters and beer.
i do have to mention that the last time we were here, which was a thursday night.. we were stuck with a waitress that was in a rush and didnt care. when she took our order, she didnt ask how we wanted the fish cooked (steamed or broiled) and didnt ask what 2 sides we wanted (which came with the entree). she also didnt bring out bread right away.. and when we asked her for some she brought it without butter.. so basically we were always asking her for things that she should have brought in the begining (such as bread dishes and extra napkins). other than that, we really havent had a bad experience here.

worth the wait, and the drive!
i will drive all the way out to tarzana just to go to this place. the sushi is excellent! everything is fresh and the special rolls are great.
you must try the beef tongue, gizzards, and chicken hearts.. i know it sounds bad.. but trust me – excellent little appetizers on skewers.
also, ask them if they have their special scallops.. they are a lot bigger than the regular ones and order a spicy scallop handroll if they do – you will love it.
i also love their take on the spicy tuna over crispy rice. try it with salmon or albacore too.
everything i have had on their menu or even off the menu has been impeccable. they know what they are doing here and they do it well.
we always have to order the albacore sashimi appetizer (with red onions and little jalapeno peppers), and johnny roll (shrimp tempura roll wrapped with spicy tuna).
i love it here.

Teru Sushi

always a favorite
i have been coming here since i was a baby, apparently. it was my parents’ favorite sushi place then and it is just as good today.
we always start with the softshell crab appetizer.. just a spritz of lemon juice and its perfect with the ponzu sauce.
i always order my regular sushi dishes here.. but there is a secret menu! try the twilight roll.. its a variety of fresh fish and avacado rolled in thin cucumber so no rice at all.. excellent! also, try the BSC roll which is baked scallops on california roll. really good.

Chevy's Fresh Mex

consistant!
this place is good. i come here a lot with friends.. we eat outside on the smoking patio. everything here is good. the fajitas are great.. the tamales are good.. the quesidillas are too.. but.. what happened to the NAPA VALLEY ‘DILLA? that my FAVORITE!! one day they updated the menu and my favorite dish was gone!
i have substituted the crispy flautas as my regular entree instead. its pretty good. i always get a side of avacado and ask for extra jalapeno jelly – its really great.
their drinks are good too but usually watered down so if youre getting a margarita.. (sour apple all the way) do yourself a favor and order a shot of tequilla to pour into the drink.

good grub!
ive never actually eaten inside but i have had take out from here for lunch at work. the after-school special is really good.. i love their take on the tomato soup.. but the grilled cheese was very greasy and i would rather have it plain white bread than the herby bread they use. they also have a really good mushroom and spinach soup that tastes like the same broth in french onion.. i like it a lot.
dont forgt the big ass ice cream sandwich… or the half-ass if you cant do the big one :b
