Nodding Head Brewery and Restaurant

Jun 23, 2007 Link

excellent brewery

Noddinghead is just a solid brewery. Their beer hits the spot after a long work day or anytime you’re in the mood to just relax with a beer. There’s plenty of space and an excellent staff.

Their menu offers both traditional bar fare and other dishes that go great with a good pint.

What I ate:
  • ***

Two pounds of mussels cooked with peppers, mushrooms, wine, and a ton of garlic. Slightly on the bland side. I’ll go for the spicy mussels next time. Served with fries.

Extras:
I came here for
fun with friends
My meal cost
between $10 and $25
I tipped
between 15% to 18%

Jamaican Jerk Hut

May 9, 2007 Link

hot hot hot!

Jamaican Jerk Hut isn’t a glamorous restaurant, but when you enter, you know that you’re going to get good food, great service, and an experience to remember.

After perusing the huge wall-mounted and extensive menu, you order at the counter and pick your table. Surprisingly, the service is very good after that. A waitress brings you your silverware, drinks and food. That’s when I feel like the fun begins as the food is well cooked, flavorful, and explosive. While I have only had Jamaican food once before, it paled in comparison to the jerk chicken served here.

I haven’t really had spicy food since I moved to Philadelphia, but I think I’ve found a reason to rebuild that tolerance.

What I ate:
  • *****

Juicy and full of flavor. Slathered with an extremely spicy sauce and served with vegetables and red beans and rice, extremely satisfying.

Magic Carpet Food Cart

Apr 24, 2007 Link

Magically delicious vegetarian food

If you ever pass close to 34th and Walnut, you’ll notice the long ass line of hungry academics patiently waiting for their chance to get a chance to order at Magic Carpet. Its that good. Everything on the menu is vegetarian, but that doesn’t mean UPenn lacks meateaters. Extremely tasty and meaty dishes like the Magic Meatballs and Seitan peppersteak satisfy the hungers of everyone.

If you’re lucky enough to order early, you can try one of their mostly spectacular daily specials. The jambalaya, in particular, was excellent.

Magic Carpet is the best place to grab lunch on the southside of campus. The owners are extremely friendly. The line moves quick. Its healthy and cheap! What more could you ask for?

Never had tempeh before. I like! If you don’t know what kind of dressing or toppings to get, just ask. They’ll treat you good.

less than $10

New Deck Tavern

Apr 16, 2007 Link

the standard

New Deck is the standard for bars in University City. They have plenty of space, widescreens, and great food. I recommend the burgers. They’re great!

White Dog Cafe

Apr 16, 2007 Link

good bar to spend an afternoon

the bar at white dog cafe is cramped, but the place is golden once you’ve got a seat. order one of the many beers on tap (many local favorites) and dine on extremely well prepared bar food. I’d go far as to say that the food is almost gourmet bar food.

either way, its a nice place to be.

try their homemade chips. not shabby at all.

What I ate:
  • ****

you could tell this was homemade and not from the frozen section of costco. this is one of those burgers that you really have to squeeze hard, open wide, and pray that you can it into your mouth. if you’re lucky, the juicy goodness won’t get all over you.

Jim's Steaks

Feb 26, 2007 Link

that's steak

As one of the heralded possesives of Philly cheesesteak royalty (Pat’s, Geno’s, Dalessandro’s… heck, there are a million cheesesteak places named after someone), Jim’s does not disappoint. The bread is average and prices are a bit high, but when you bite into a Jim’s, you know your mouth becomes alive with the taste of high quality steak. Just thinking about it makes me salivate. You can’t go wrong if you’re in the area.

Located on 4th and South Street, Jim’s is located in the heart of all the madness of the area. People watching and a characters of all sort will add to the experience of tasting the best steak in the area.

What I ate:

tasty meat, but they chop it a little to fine for my tastes. i like to bite into my steak.

Ruth's Chris Steak House

Jan 15, 2007 Link

mm...sizzling butter

Ruth’s Chris is a great steakhouse if you want to impress someone. I’ve never chosen my restaurants based on ambience, but I have to say that the decor and staff really made the dinner feel special. I’d definitely recommend Ruth’s Chris for a business meal or special occasion. You won’t be disappointed with your experience.

As for the food, the best part of the meal is definitely when the steak first arrives sizzling in butter! What a concept! My mouth watered uncontrollably at the sight and smell, and I was not disappointed as my steak was cooked perfectly.

So far, Ruth Chris has impressed me the most out of the standard franchise steakhouses. IMO, they do steak right.
