Axum Cafe

a tasty communal experience.
A friend was in town, and I was tasked with figuring out what to do for dinner. A coworker suggested this place as a great, inexpensive spot in the lower haight. Dinner came, and went, and a good time was had by all. A couple folks were eating ethiopian food for the first time, and were in for a shock w/ the lack of utensils, and the communal eating experience.
We had a group of 8, and we were taking up a ton of space, so going with a smaller group is probably wise. Our group ended up ordering 3 meat dishes, and the veggie platter for four. While both were tasty, everyone was definitely favoring the veggies which were packed with flavor. All in all, a great spot to get your hands dirty and fill your belly! (Might want to pack that Purell, everyone is eating with their hands after all…)

Little Star Pizza
May 7, 2007
when zachary's is just too far away...
Now, I grew up in new york city (home of the best damn pizza in the world!!!), and I love my pizza. Having recently moved to the Yay Area! ...I was psyched about everything, except the pizza. All I knew about California pizza is that you guys threw some weird shiz on your pizzas… artichokes? guacamole? carne asada?
Ok ok, so on to the important stuff – turns out there’s some pretty darn tasty pizza in the bay (and not all that weird either!), and Little Star is a nice spot for getting your fix of big-ass Chicago style pizza. I’ve got to compare this place to Zachary’s, and unfortunately – it doesn’t hold up, but that doesn’t mean it’s not good! I think my only real complaint is the hours. Want Little Star for lunch? I don’t think so! They don’t open until 5. If I had a myFaves pizza 5, Little Star would definitely take a spot.

Zachary's Chicago Pizza
Apr 24, 2007
chi-town in the bay!
On a cross country drive to sunny California, one of the stops was Chicago for some real deep dish pizza. Yum yum yummy!
Fast forward a few months later, craving some Chicago-style pizza, a friend recommended trying Zachary’s for some deep dish action. Having tasted the pizza, I think this might have been even better than when I had it in Chicago! Tasty crust, delish sauce, gooey cheese, and excellent toppings coming together to create a pizza experience best enjoyed with a knife and fork. Can’t wait to go back, although my waist might not forgive me for it…
