Hidden gem in the city
This was my second visit to Nicky’s, previously it was however during lunch. This is definitely a hot place for friends to meet as we ran into the crown as soon as we walked in! That is always a good sign to me.
We were seated promptly and the hostess explained the evening specials. On a Friday night in Wisconsin where is the place to be? … a Fish Fry! Nicky’s fits into that category with its own special fish dishes to tempt your pallet!
Even though the restaurant was busy, we were taken care of very well. Our drinks arrived in a very timely manner – even considering the crowd that was at the bar!
One of the other things (aside from the great ambiance of this classic building) is the White Cheese Curds. In Wisconsin, it is all about the cheese. I first fell in love with White Cheese Curds at the resort I worked at a few years ago and have found that these are hard to find! When I discover someplace that serves White Cheese Curds, they score a few extra points in my book!
Nicky’s features some tantelizing sandwiches, but are most famous for their Muffuletta sandwiches. They feature a traditional Muffuletta as well as a chicken variety that is fabulous. There are many more sandwiches on the menu that I want to try, so I will have to come back often!
The only downfall of the entire dining experience was that the fries were not the same as they were before. When we were here for lunch before, the fries were skin on seasoned fries that were fabulous! The fries we had this time were a regular french fry with a peppery seasoning on them. I thought they were “ok” but my husband did not care for them at all. Next time, we will ask for no pepper on our fries!
Dishes I tried:
Blackened Tuna Sandwich
This Tuna Steak Sandwich was unbelievable! The tuna was perfectly prepared and Nicky’s adds their own tiwst to this classic sandwich. The Balckened Tuna steak is topped with Feta Cheese, Olive Tapenade and a creamy Lemon Pepper Garlic Sauce.
Before too long I realized that I was getting full and I still have almost half a sandwich to eat! The solution? Take off the top bun and eat the rest open faced!
Now, I did not include the fries in my dish review as they were not the main feature. Those, as noted above, were ok, but not the usual fries we had received when we were here for lunch

THE place to go for Breakfast!
This has been a long time favorite of the entire family! Whenever we have friends or family visiting from out of town, we have to go to the Pancake Place at least once. The staff is always very propmt and frienly but the food is what will bring you back.
They are known for their panckaes, but they do have a lot more on their menu. We often had to warn people of the size of the pancakes before the go ahead and order the large stack! My son has discovered though that the chocolate chip pancakes are great as leftovers!!
They also have more than just breakfast! The Sunday Chicken is a great treat on those Sunday’s when we don’t want to cook. Dine-in or Carry-out, their chicken is a winner in our house!
Dishes I tried:
Mediterranean Omelette
From the first time I tried this omelette, it was a blue ribbom winner to me! Packed with sundried tomatoes, feta, spinach and more, this omelette, served with golden hashbrowns will not leave you hungry.
Every time that we visit, I say that I am going to order something different, but I always go back to this omelette!

Quickly a new favorite!
As a spur of the moment choice, we decided to stop here and grab a quick carry-out dinner since no one felt like cooking. This was the first time that we ever tried this particular restaurant so we really didn’t know what to expect. When we first walked in the front door, we actually were not sure if we walked in the right door – it looked more like a small store! They have a wide variety of themed items and decor for sale in the lobby area that was really cool to look through.
I noticed then that the rest of the restaurant was a separate room off to the side. The hostess quickly came out and showed us the menu. Since my huband does not eat chinese cuisine very often, she was wonderful about explaining what was in each of the dishes that he inquired about. There was many of the “typical” dishes you would expect to find in a chinese restaurant, but there was also a few new dishes that I will have to come back again to try! We quickly found a few dishes to try and our order was placed.
She told us that our food would be ready in a few minutes and we actually asked her to wait a few minutes before they started preparing our food because we had a few quick errands to run.
When we returned 15 mintues later, she was just finishing packing up our dinners. Everything was packed neatly into one box for easy transport back home.
The food was perfectly cooked and tasted just as good. The food tasted very fresh and the portions were bigger than we expected and we both ended up with enough leftover for 2 more meals! 3 meals for the price of one? That sounds like a pretty great deal for me! Most of the time when we get chinese take-out I feel like I am wasting so much rice, since they usually give so much more than you will ever need. This was not the case here. We were giving one large container of rice for our two entree’s. This was the perfect amout of rice and we ended up wasing none of it!
We will definelty be back again. Next time we will dine in though so we can enjoy the classic ambiance of the restaurant.
Dishes I tried:
Cashew Chicken
We did get this as carry-out but teh food was definetly given to us hot – I actually had to put my jacket between the bottom of box and my lap to insulate the heat! When we got home, everything was still good and hot.
The food was very fresh and cooked perfectly! all of the vegetables were tender crispt and fulll of flavor. I really couldn’t have asked for a better balance of seasoning to accompany the natural flavors of the food.
If this entree is any reflection of what the rest of the entree’s are like, I think I may have found my new favorite chinese restaurant!
