live life fully, eat at the reef

can’t describe how tasty every dish in the place is, not to mention the food! Brought back to oly by the same guy who brung up old school pizzeria, the reef is such an unconventional institution that it’s an “unstitution”. Open 20 hours a day, 3-6-5 days of the year, since 1812 (roughly). Shoot, they still got Verna working there after 45 years!
Great well drinks available back in the funky, loud, hip lounge or in the main dining area.
Food is local, sustainable, down-to-earth and heart-warming. Breakfast is served all day. Real ice cream milkshakes. Artesian well water just like the old brewery. Everything made from scratch.

Dishes I tried:

Liberty Burger

Locally raised, all-natural, Black Angus burgers. Tuesday nites are all you can eat sometimes.

nothing, nothing, nothing

Mcmenamin’s has certainly got their aesthetic and their M.O. down to a science. Unfortunately, what they have sacrificed in the process is any semblance of real flavor or uniqueness. Bad food, bad prices, bad service, the unholy trinity. Sadly, I have come to expect this more and more from any restaurant with more than three locations. I think that there are just far too many differences regionally to be so spread out and expect there to not be an exponential drop in your product. Victims of their own success and the “American” drive to grow, Grow, GROW! Fifty-some-odd locations has put these brothers McMenamin to the test, and I for one found their Olympia spot sorely lacking. Hell, the Spar had surly staff serving greasy frozen food for decades before these guys and their team of history usurping designers came along. It’s crap.
