it starts with the free slice of bread....
So I had some free time waiting for a Greyhound bus. And I hadn’t had lunch yet. I wandered outside the bus station and came across this charming little café. When I entered, I was offered a free slice of bread. Who could say no to free food?! I had a choice of 5 kinds and I chose the Dakota: a dense whole wheat multigrain bread. And you don’t get a tiny crumb you get a HUGE THICK slice. It was really really good.
Based on that wonderful taste I stayed and ordered a sandwich. While I ate, I noticed at least one Greyhound bus driver also ordering food. So it must be really good here if the drivers come in.
A whole loaf of fresh bread averages $5.95. And there are many choices of flavors, all made onsite. Also available are salads, sweets, some beverages, and jars of mustard and other locally made spreads. Pick up a leaflet near the cash to learn about the breads of the month, and sign up for the mailing list.

fantastic!!!
This restaurant is located in the Essex Shoppes outlet mall. The store really is tiny, you could walk by and miss it without the sandwich board advertising the specials. I went at lunchtime where you can get a trio for 7.95: pick one item from each category: soups and drinks, appetizer, and main course.
I’m used to eating Thai fast food that is on the salty side and kicks you in the gut with spice. This doesn’t. The spice is there but it’s warm and pleasant, you taste all the flavors not just fire. And it’s not salty. it’s wonderful! I love it and would go back if/when I return to the area.
Dishes I tried:
Musumann beef curry
The lunch special came on a large oval plate. I got a bowl of beef curry, a mound of plain rice, a decent helping of salad, a pork skewer (my chosen Group B item) and a glass of iced tea (see below).
The curry has a good amount of liquid, so use the rice or mash up the chunks of potato to soak up some liquid. it also includes chunks of carrot, a crown of crushed peanuts, and an undertone of coconut. Boy was that good! You will have a pleasant tingle in your mouth and you can taste a variety of spices.
ginger iced tea
A special shout out for the ginger iced tea, included in the lunch special above. This was icy cold and very refreshing on a boiling hot day. Not too sweet and the ginger flavor was fresh and distinct without overpowering. I could have drunk a whole pitcher of this.

More heavenly food
Why am I writing a second review of this restaurant? Not just because the food is incredible. On my earlier review, I hit the Save button after 5 items to be sure that what I had written wouldn’t be lost in cyberspace. Then I discovered I couldn’t add more food to the review! So here are the other lovely things I experienced.
Dishes I tried:
coconut curry tofu
This is a lunch dish and not a spicy item. You get a square of crispy tofu served on top of a yellow sauce, including green peas and onions. Don’t make those gagging noises about tofu, this is so light that it could be mistaken for fish. Ask for a spoon, there is a decent amount of liquid and you want to lap up every drop.
Sugar Shack Coffee
This is an alcoholic beverage. The menu lists Sortilege (Quebec maple whiskey) as the alcohol, but they were out of it and substituted a Vermont organic maple liqueur (sorry didn’t catch the name). And the hot coffee was topped with whipped cream and drizzled carefully with maple syrup. A pleasantly sweet ending to the evening.

bring your appetite... and a baggie!
This sushi restaurant offers a tatami room for groups, where you leave your shoes at the entrance and sit on the floor. Smaller parties can sit at tables. Usually it is rather chilly inside.
While there is an a la carte menu, I’ve always gone for the All You Can Eat route. On Fridays and Saturdays it is $23.95 and other days it is $19.95. You have to order everything separately now, including miso soup, ginger, and wasabi.
PACE YOURSELF do not order too much at once. You can always order another round, but you will be charged per piece for any sushi you do not eat. Don’t waste it, bring it home if your eyes prove bigger than your tummy.
Groups of 6+ will find a service charge added to the bill. (but they are upfront about this)
Dishes I tried:
Ka-Boom
This is one of my favorites! Crispy red smapper is wrapped into a cornet and served warm. You pour a little sauce onto the top and eat it like an ice cream cone. Fun but filling!
butterfish maki
This is a small maki roll with a beige fish filling. I found it quite addictive!
vegetable tempura
Slices of vegetables are coated in batter and fried lightly, and served piping hot. Our selection included sweet potato, zucchini, and Spanish onion rings.

This was a lot of fun!
This restaurant is located across the road from Westmount Square. Our large group filled the place to capacity. There is a lot of memorabilia all over the restaurant including street signs, a bright red phone booth (missing the phone) and little double decker buses on the tables. British comedy plays on “the telly”.
Afternoon tea is served at 3 pm each day. You get to enjoy real china cups and saucers — not all of them match, but among the mismatched saucers was my kitchen china pattern, what a lovely surprise.
The ambiance is far from pretentious — Jeremy the proprietor will joke and juggle throughout the afternoon. I left with a huge smile on my face and I look forward to returning.
Caveat for large groups: We were ~50 people and it did get rather warm and noisy.
Dishes I tried:
afternoon tea
Besides endless quantities of the world’s most popular beverage, you get a plate of tiny cucumber sandwiches as well as slivers of cake, cookies, fresh fruit, and whole scones (warm) from a silver cake stand. YUMMY! I could not get enough goodies and kept nibbling — just one more morsel!

YAY for tilapia
Well since I was with Evelyne I can’t add much to the description she wrote. But I did want to add one delightful dish below.
also one thing that surprised me: On the day before Ash Wednesday there was not one shred of decoration or celebratory note towards Mardi Gras. yeah I see you raising your eyebrow!
Dishes I tried:
tilapia
Thanks to this restaurant I am now a huge fan of tilapia fish. It was served in cocnut sauce with green peppers and rice, it just melted in my mouth. every bite was heavenly. This came with a table d’hote of escargots appetizers, salad, and passion fruit mousse for dessert.

Fast and filling!
This is the place to go when visiting the Old Market. Check out the funky old signs and advertising on the walls. Bring your appetite because you will get a LOT of food for your money: The affordable meals include a large fresh salad bar and warm bread. As is customary in Omaha, your soft drink will never run dry.
Dishes I tried:
eggplant parmesan
The eggplant was sliced and breaded, fried crispy without being oily, and served with spaghetti. Wonderful and flavorful. I tried recreating it at home but it’s not the same as the restaurant version.

Using a cc? Check your statement.
Hi folks,
Last week I was back to Veritas and used a prepaid MasterCard that is linked to Rewards Network. Transaction went through ok. A week later there was an unauthorized access to the card, from an address I do not recognize, and the figure in Euros was the same figure I spent here in C$.
Luckily the trx was flagged and my card was merely locked.
Be careful! gonna skip the points and use cash next time.

hidden treasure!
Located a short stroll from the Atwater Market. This is a very tiny place, maybe you could seat 20 tops. Choices were limited the night that I was there. Do not be afraid of things being spicy, the chef will adjust it to your taste. Service was on the slow side because there was only one employee to serve and cook for everyone. And you must must MUST order the African donuts, served in a huge bowl with maple syrup on the side. I would go back for sure.
Dishes I tried:
Sosso chicken
Tasty grilled chicken with rice and beans. You can ask for it spicy or very spicy, and if you like to eat fire there is a condiment served on the side.
African donuts
You will wait an hour for this but it is so worth it! A huge bowlful of hot spheres with a dish of maple syrup on the side for dipping. Amazing!

Wide selection at a decent price
This buffet has something for everyone. It is well stocked and hot foods are piping hot. You can choose items from all kinds of cuisines, from European to Oriental and everything in between. There are even 6 flavors of sushi! Everything is made on the premises including the desserts, and there is lots and lots of seating. Dirty plates are collected quickly.
The price has gone up recently but there were at least 5 hot areas (3 center, meat station, fish station), salad bar, sushi, pizza, ice cream, and more. Soup if desired is brought to the table.
Dishes I tried:
All you can eat buffet (lunch)
My favorites on this visit were the roast cornish game hen, the garlic spareribs, and the immense roast potato.
And dessert. Gotta save room for all those lovely squares!

06/15/2009Hello rwarren69,
One of my customers forwarded this link to me and I came across your input. Firstly, I thank you for your wonderful first review. It’s always a pleasure to read about our customers’ experiences at Veritas.
I am alarmed however at your most recent electronic transaction with us. Nothing like this has ever happened here. I have just recently joined the Rewards Network program (3 weeks) and I aim to get to the bottom of this with them. If this indeed has happened through Veritas, I sincerely apologize and will take all steps to ensure it will never happen again.
Let me know if I can be of any service to you.
Many Thanks,
Sam
