it starts with the free slice of bread....

So I had some free time waiting for a Greyhound bus. And I hadn’t had lunch yet. I wandered outside the bus station and came across this charming little café. When I entered, I was offered a free slice of bread. Who could say no to free food?! I had a choice of 5 kinds and I chose the Dakota: a dense whole wheat multigrain bread. And you don’t get a tiny crumb you get a HUGE THICK slice. It was really really good.

Based on that wonderful taste I stayed and ordered a sandwich. While I ate, I noticed at least one Greyhound bus driver also ordering food. So it must be really good here if the drivers come in.

A whole loaf of fresh bread averages $5.95. And there are many choices of flavors, all made onsite. Also available are salads, sweets, some beverages, and jars of mustard and other locally made spreads. Pick up a leaflet near the cash to learn about the breads of the month, and sign up for the mailing list.

Northern Spy apples, sliced with the peel on, Brie cheese, and apple-raisin chutney on Dakota bread (see above) and pressed in a panini. Served in a basket. It sounded different, and it was very tasty.

fantastic!!!

This restaurant is located in the Essex Shoppes outlet mall. The store really is tiny, you could walk by and miss it without the sandwich board advertising the specials. I went at lunchtime where you can get a trio for 7.95: pick one item from each category: soups and drinks, appetizer, and main course.

I’m used to eating Thai fast food that is on the salty side and kicks you in the gut with spice. This doesn’t. The spice is there but it’s warm and pleasant, you taste all the flavors not just fire. And it’s not salty. it’s wonderful! I love it and would go back if/when I return to the area.

The lunch special came on a large oval plate. I got a bowl of beef curry, a mound of plain rice, a decent helping of salad, a pork skewer (my chosen Group B item) and a glass of iced tea (see below).

The curry has a good amount of liquid, so use the rice or mash up the chunks of potato to soak up some liquid. it also includes chunks of carrot, a crown of crushed peanuts, and an undertone of coconut. Boy was that good! You will have a pleasant tingle in your mouth and you can taste a variety of spices.

A special shout out for the ginger iced tea, included in the lunch special above. This was icy cold and very refreshing on a boiling hot day. Not too sweet and the ginger flavor was fresh and distinct without overpowering. I could have drunk a whole pitcher of this.

More heavenly food

Why am I writing a second review of this restaurant? Not just because the food is incredible. On my earlier review, I hit the Save button after 5 items to be sure that what I had written wouldn’t be lost in cyberspace. Then I discovered I couldn’t add more food to the review! So here are the other lovely things I experienced.

coconut curry tofu

This is a lunch dish and not a spicy item. You get a square of crispy tofu served on top of a yellow sauce, including green peas and onions. Don’t make those gagging noises about tofu, this is so light that it could be mistaken for fish. Ask for a spoon, there is a decent amount of liquid and you want to lap up every drop.

Sugar Shack Coffee

This is an alcoholic beverage. The menu lists Sortilege (Quebec maple whiskey) as the alcohol, but they were out of it and substituted a Vermont organic maple liqueur (sorry didn’t catch the name). And the hot coffee was topped with whipped cream and drizzled carefully with maple syrup. A pleasantly sweet ending to the evening.

Comfort food gone fancy -- Patience will be rewarded

I had heard many things about APdC over the years: much of it good, a few discouraged diners. Finally I’ve had the opportunity to go and try it for myself.

One thing that surprised me is despite the upscale cuisine (and eyebrow-raising prices to match) this is not a white tablecloth establishment. The feel is more rustic, with bare wooden tables, like being in a sugar shack. And a hockey game playing in the bathroom!

Our group’s challenge was to eat affordably. It is very easy to blow the budget but I managed to keep my bill under $20 with tax.

The staff are pleasant but on this particular night were rushed off their feet, so it took a while for the food to arrive. But once it did, it was worth the wait. Everything I tasted — including little bites from my companions — had strong, well-balanced flavors with a touch of sweetness. And the food was very filling.

This plate includes homemade blood sausage with mashed potatoes, baked apple slices, and caramelized red onions. The boudin was very smooth and rich, with no gaggy aftertaste, and the apple and onion lend a delightful sweetness. Even the sausage casing was pleasant to eat. I would definitely order this again.

chocolate molten cake

The restaurant is quite willing to split a dessert among two bills, which I did with one of my tablemates for this dessert. I was disappointed in how small this was for the price — it was cupcake sized — but it was dark and rich. The core was dark chocolate sauce, there were half a dozen candied whole cranberries on the plate, plus two drizzles of cranberry and maple syrup coulis. I was too polite to lick the plate!

the booby prize

I discovered this place through a newspaper contest. I won dinner for two, and was looking forward to something new and unusual. As instructed I phoned the restaurant to let them know I was coming, and I made a reservation for the date.

The restaurant is listed with a Cote des Neiges address but the building is actually around the corner on Linton, connected to a chain coffee shop. It was once a pizza parlor, the chain’s logo still visible in the interior glass. There is traditional art on the walls, and mirrors on the ceiling, but the decor is minimal; and a large TV on one wall played a talk show from Senegal. The large terrasse was empty due to the rainy weather.

Upon arrival I mentioned my reservation, which puzzled the staff. (Given how empty the restaurant was, perhaps a reservation wasn’t really necessary.) I was left to wait on a very comfy sofa for more than 10 minutes, while the manager was summoned. When the manager greeted me, he seemed confused about why he was there to see me. Once he realized that I was the prizewinner, he took the waitress aside and gave her a stern lecture about what we were allowed to order. I didn’t catch it word for word, but it was quite limiting. No one told us directly that there were any limits to the prize.

The waitress didn’t show us to the table, she paused at the stairs while we walked up and selected our own (wobbly) table. After a few minutes she brought us the one-page menu and spoke in general terms of fish and chicken meals. She did not understand most of our (basic) questions about the food (in either English or French). Repeated requests to learn what kind of fish could not be answered. We were assured the food was not spicy,“we’ll put it on the side.” With my chicken dinner, I was given a choice of plaintain or cassava couscous; I chose the plaintain and she confirmed “cassava couscous”. She walked away without taking appetizer or beverage orders; when I called her back to order an appetizer, she repeated about plaintain and cassava couscous, but would not take the appetizer order. The waitress had a general air of disinterest, even to bring a glass of water seemed like a big bother.

Our meals were much spicier than we had been led to believe, with salty and sour overtones. The plates were dominated by the starch (rice for my guest, cassava for me) with a small amount of protein and vegetables. Despite this we politely ate it all. Our empty plates sat in front of us for more than 30 minutes, with absolutely no sign of any staff. On a whim my guest sent me downstairs in search of staff. The manager, in his office, pointed me out towards the lobby. I found the waitress at the front desk, chatting to her friends. I asked her what kind of dessert was available, and she didn’t understand what dessert was. “something sweet?” I inquired. Then she suddenly regained ability to speak English and announced loudly, “you take more food, you buy!” We declined and departed.

The letter confirming my win did not place any restrictions on my meal, other than the dates to visit. I thought this was an absolutely horrible way to treat customers. Would it have been any different if we were paying, and not part of a promotion? I didn’t feel welcome at all. The whole experience left a bad taste in our mouths, literally and figuratively. We could not wait to get away from there and the general area.

A grilled chicken drumstick and back section, blackened on the outside and bloody on the inside. The meat was scrawny, more bone than meat. It came with cassava (a white starchy vegetable) shredded into tiny flakes, spiced invisibly with something fiery and topped with a dry, even more fiery salsa.

Well this is what the waitress called it, the closest equivalent in the online menu is Tiéboudieune. Most of the dish is rice: long grain rice cooked in a salty reddish liquid, and molded into a big square. The fish was dark fleshed (we never did figure out what kind it was), in a few bony chunks, added almost as an afterthought. Some cooked carrot and broccoli were also on the plate, as was a sour black condiment that tasted of olives.

Avoid this place

thumbs waaay down to this place. I was with a group of 9. Arrived at 6:40. Roundly ignored by the staff. Drinks order taken at 7:45 or so. menus arrived
at 8:05 after multiple requests. Some drinks arrived before 8:30, anyone who did NOT order a
margarita got their drink around 9 pm after repeated reminders. orders taken at 8:20, again after repeated attempts to engage the staff. The manager was more interested in walking around the dining room with a stupid grin on his face. Salads arrived for those who ordered them ~9:15 and only
after all 4 salads were cleared did the mains arrive (9:40). I nearly walked out. This has got to be the worst service I’ve ever had. I
took some of my dinner home (in my own baggie), paid at the counter, and bolted out by 10:00. and NO I did not let the manager add a margarita I didn’t order to my bill!

pathetic

This is a sit-down restaurant and bar in Trudeau Airport, departures food court. (public area) If this is meant to be a showcase of fine Montreal dining, it falls very short. Particularly with the service. The seating hostess noticed our arrival but looked all around the restaurant for someone else to take care of us, before coming over to seat us. Once seated, there was also a rather long wait for a waiter (9 minutes) and a nearby abandoned table was not cleared for more than 10 minutes. I was also shortchanged on the bill.

This is one of the cheapest things on the menu. It was bland and boring, and garnished with a very sour slice of orange . It comes with slices of potato.

cute concept, but once is enough

This is a temporary installation at the foot of McGill street, a short walk from the Square Victoria metro. The restaurant is housed in a converted shipping container. The staff are perky and perfectly bilingual.

The specialty is lobster from Îles-de-la-Madeleine. The limited menu includes lobster roll, lobster pizza, and clam chowder.

Due to the limited amount of seating, our group parked on picnic benches nearby. Watch out for bees and wasps if you follow suit!

Overall the food was ok, a cute concept. If I were spending the day in the Old Port and happened across this place, I might eat here, but I can’t see myself deliberately searching this place out again.

The individual pizza is cooked while you wait. The sausage (from Brome Lake ducks) is sliced paper thin and topping is pretty generous. It was very fresh, piping hot, not greasy but not a big wow of flavor. You will have trouble cutting it with paper utensils.

bring your appetite... and a baggie!

This sushi restaurant offers a tatami room for groups, where you leave your shoes at the entrance and sit on the floor. Smaller parties can sit at tables. Usually it is rather chilly inside.

While there is an a la carte menu, I’ve always gone for the All You Can Eat route. On Fridays and Saturdays it is $23.95 and other days it is $19.95. You have to order everything separately now, including miso soup, ginger, and wasabi.

PACE YOURSELF do not order too much at once. You can always order another round, but you will be charged per piece for any sushi you do not eat. Don’t waste it, bring it home if your eyes prove bigger than your tummy.

Groups of 6+ will find a service charge added to the bill. (but they are upfront about this)

This is one of my favorites! Crispy red smapper is wrapped into a cornet and served warm. You pour a little sauce onto the top and eat it like an ice cream cone. Fun but filling!

fast and filling

After wandering around on Church Street, I stopped in here for supper and a little rest. I sat inside which seemed quite dark but was adequate to read the menu. Service was fast and pleasant. On the television were two different sports channels, one showing the Rose Bowl football game — in August?! how odd.

This is a sandwich you should eat with a knife and fork. It comes open faced with lots of tomato sauce and two huge slabs of cheese on top. It was hot and it was pretty good. It is not spicy but it is flavorful. Accompanying the sandwich were a long slice of dill pickle and a bag of Lay’s plain potato chips.
