Panera Bread
Aug 21, 2008
Sidewalk Sequey
The menu items were from the 1/2 + 1/2 menu…ostensibly a savings. How did we wind up w/ a bill for $17? The sides were standard offering: a baguette, chips, or an apple. Being a health-food fan, I went for the apple…not a prime speciman, but flavor was good.
Here’s the deal…
For zip atmosphere (we eat at the outside tables just to avoid the badly behaved kids climbing on the benches of the booths), Panera’s value has got to come down to service — still a.o.k. — and food/value. I can tell you that prices are constantly being raised just from the increase on my favorite a.m. item: cinnamon crunch bagel. As the appeal of “al fresco” eating winds down, with the coming of autumn, I’ll be looking for either some coupon discounts or in-store specials. Otherwise, we’ll browse the local media for an “opening day/week” bonanza somewhere new.

Broccoli Cheddar Soup
Bland and not piping hot. Accompanying 1/2 sandwich was smoked turkey on country wheat bread. The staff should ask (when taking order) if you care to hear what other choice of bread you might have the sandwich on…the only virtue of country wheat is that it would be easy on somone w/ dentures. The trimmings on the sandwich were a very thin, anaemic slice of tomato, scant amount of lettuce. Taste level somewhere between what you’d find in your lunchbox from Mom and a Jared special.
