Salt Creek Wine Bar

Aug 16, 2008 Link

Eclectic mix of food and wine, superb service

The Salt Creek Wine Bar is a great little bar and eatery just across from the Brookfield Metra stop. The ambiance is great, the service is excellent.

They have wine flights available of several different varietals, consisting of three 2-oz. glasses. They offer a great variety of low and mid-level wines by the glass and bottle, and a smaller selection of pricier wines only by the bottle. Among their wines available by the glass, there is something for every taste and occasion.

The food menu is small and eclectic. You won’t find traditional dinner entrees, but several sandwiches, along with some hors d’oeuvre type offerings, including cheese flights consisting of three cheeses of your choice, and several desserts. People who eat a vegetarian diet will find several choices.

There is often live music, ranging from jazz to folk to rock. Overall, if you like wine and casual eclectic dining, you cannot go wrong. It’s my favorite place in Brookfield by far.

What I ate:
  • *****

You choose three cheeses from about ten different, mostly imported cheeses. None disappoint. Pepper jack is not on the menu. Comes with walnuts, olives, a basket of artisan bread and crackers, and olive oil. Fantastic for sharing.

  • *****

Chunks of steak, blue cheese, and cranberry chutney grilled Panini-style between two slices of crusty artisan bread. Awesome combination, hits the spot if you have a craving for beef. Comes with a side salad.

  • ****

A pound of mussels simmered in white wine, garlic, etc. Not a unique dish, but they do it pretty well here.

  • ****

Small, thin slices of bread, topped with herb cheese, slices of cold-smoked salmon, onion and capers. Hors d’oeuvre style. Nice, delicate flavor, great for sharing.

Chinese Kitchen

Jun 29, 2008 Link

Very decent authentic Chinese restaurant

As noted before, there is little in the way of ambiance, but the food makes up for it. We were the only people in the restaurant not of Asian descent, which I took as a good sign. The menu is varied, but not so varied as to cause concern. The Peking duck looked great, but I stuck with something smaller and less expensive.

What I ate:

Good, simple dish. Nothing in the way of a heavy sauce. The shrimp were plentiful, medium size.
