Krispy Kreme

Feb 28, 2008 Link

Fresh Original Glazed is the best!

If you’re craving a donut, Krispy Kreme is the place to go. My favorite and only donut I eat there is the Original Glazed. It’s light, moist and melts in your mouth.

Little Hong Kong Cafe

Feb 28, 2008 Link

Don't pass the salt please!

One of my all time favorite comfort dish is Beef Chow Mein. Since moving down here in LA, most restaurants call it Beef with Pan Fried Noodles.

Every time I go to a Chinese restaurant, I need to give their pan fried noodles a try. So here at Little Hong Kong Cafe, we did. We also ordered their Hong Kong style Wonton Soup with Noodles (another fave of mine) and Vegetable Egg Rolls.

First came the Vegetable Egg Rolls. They were good. Light and crispy. Then came the Wonton Soup with Noodles. Whoa! I was blown away by the saltiness. The broth was not edible. The dumplings were average. Alas, came the Beef with Pan Fried Noodles. We noticed at first it tasted a bit on the sweet side, then better. It was ok. Just ok.

I had high hopes for this place from reading other reviews. Maybe they had a really off day, substitute chef? I don’t know…I wasn’t impressed. Like I said earlier, just ok. Service was fine though.

Johnny Rockets

Feb 27, 2008 Link

Didn't know they do breakfast

It was one of those rainy days and we saw that Johnny Rockets was open and had a breakfast menu.

The menu was simple. Only a number typical breakfast items. We had bacon, eggs, breakfast potatoes, toast and coffee. It was simple and good. How can you screw up bacon and eggs?

A couple of other occasions, we had lunch there. You know burger and fries. It was good. My sister loves their milkshakes, especially their peanut butter and chocolate one.

Service is good and cute 50’s diner atmosphere.

Acadie French Crepes

Average crepes

I found this place a bit over priced for their crepes. It wasn’t anything special. Their coffee tasted better. The service was good.

Sushi Katsu-ya

Feb 27, 2008 Link

Trendy and hip...so is the food

We went on a Monday. You would think it wouldn’t be so busy and even with our reservation, we had to wait. Saw some B celebrities there.

The place has a hip ambiance. Lots of people chatting and laughing, while the sushi chefs are all busy creating art at the bar. One of my favorite places to sit in a sushi restaurant is by the bar.

We had a bunch different things, different sushis, Robert roll, soft shell crabs, raw shrimp, seared scallop with fois gras, green tea tiramisu and of course sake.

Everything was really yummy. The presentation was pretty and clean. It’s not the best sushi I’ve had, but really good.

For the four of us, the total bill was exactly $200. We’ll definitely come again.

Sushi King

Feb 27, 2008 Link

Your neighborhood Sushi place

A friend of ours told us about this place a while ago and last night we finally tried it. We decided to sit by the bar to see what the sushi chef would create for us.

We had the halibut, mackerel and shrimp sushis, fried shrimp heads, caterpillar roll, shrimp tempura and a shot glass (concoction of oysters, radishes, a raw quail egg, hot sauce and other stuff…a special request from my husband to the chef). I also had a cold sake and my husband had a Japanese beer.

Everything was fresh and tasty. The tempura batter was crispy and light. It’s a definite neighborhood joint for simple and good Japanese food.

We’re definitely coming by again.

Le Saigon

Feb 27, 2008 Link

Best choice for Vietnamese on the West Side

There are not many choices as Vietnamese restaurants go in the West Side and having Le Saigon here is great when you have a craving for Vietnamese food.

They have a select menu of dishes. The prices are average and the food is fresh and good.

We had the Bun Thit-Tom Nuong (Rice Vermicelli with Beef), Nem Nuong (Rice Paper, assorted herbs, and Lettuce, Charbroiled Sliced Pork, Shrimp skewer), Cha Gio (Imperial Rolls) and finished it off with Café Sua Da (Hot Coffee with Condense Milk).

Everything was fresh and cooked perfectly. I would say the taste of the food was good, not great. The service was great. Our waiter was very friendly and efficient.

We will definitely come back.

Porto's Bakery & Party Store

Nov 9, 2007 Link

Cheese rolls rock!

I love this place. I wish it was closer. I was going to have them cater a party because I love a lot of their foods. Too bad the party had to be canceled.

My absolute #1 favorite is their cheese rolls. These flaky and sweet pastries filled with sweet cheese. It’s so good. It’s so addictive, you just can’t have one. They also have it with guava and that’s good too.

Their sandwiches are great. I love the Cuban Sandwich. They have Meat Pies, Potato Balls, Chorizo Pies, Ham Croquettes…I can go on. So far everything I’ve tried is really good.

The place is always packed. I suggest going early on the weekends. And don’t forget to pick up some of their freshly baked breads. Delicious!

T's Thai

Nov 9, 2007 Link

If you're looking just for some Thai curry

There’s so many Thai restaurants in my area, and only a few that I found good. T’s Thai is good if you’re craving Thai curry.

We’ve tried the Vegetable Curry, Chicken Kang Khew Wan (Green curry , eggplant & coconut milk) and Chicken Kang Ka-Li (Chicken and potatoes in a mild yellow curry with coconut milk). It’s all good. We’ve ordered it in mild (for the kids) and very spicy. The “very spicy” is not so hot, so don’t be afraid to venture there.

I would stay away from the Mee Krob (I’m still searching for the tamarind base type of Mee Krob). Also, the Tempura Vegetables which is not tempura at all. It’s a piece of vegetable covered in this thick layer or orange dough, deep fried and super greasy. It was gross.

I liked their Fried Glass Noodles. That was yummy. And also we enjoyed the Spareribs. They give you about 5 or 6 ribs and only one rib was a bit on the tough side. But the others were good.

So if you have the need for some curry, this is the place to try out.

Swirlz Cupcakes

Nov 7, 2007 Link

Swirlz survived the plane ride from Chi-Town to LA

It was well worth the wait. My sisters brought me a present from Swirlz Cupcakes. OMG. I love it!!!

They brought me a box of six cupcakes:
Red Velvet
Carrot
Vanilla Pistachio
Chocolate Peanut Butter
Vanilla
Bittersweet Chocolate

There’s not one that I didn’t like. The frosting was so good and buttery. The cake was delicious and moist. I was in cupcake heaven when I was sampling all of these. They looked so pretty too. I wish I thought of taking a picture of them all.

If I ever visit or pass through Chicago, I’m definitely dropping by Swirlz. :o)
