Travel to Venezuela without leaving the New York!

I love to travel, but in this dreadful economy I have decided to postpone trips and find alternatives to transport me to exotic locales. I discovered El Cocotero in Chelsea on a quiet side street (18th St to be exact).

Upon opening the door, I felt like I had landed in Venezuela. The lively music, colorful decor, and friendly staff reminded me of a tropical street cafe where one could lounge, socialize while drinking native drinks.

Being a vegetarian I am usually a bit worried trying Latin cuisine, but their extentsive menu did not disappoint. Arepas, areapa, arepas! The authentic corn meal treats are stuffed with Venezuelan farmer’s cheese and black beans. Sandwiches and salads galore. Neighboring tables’ orders could tempt even the most devoted of vegetarians, but luckily I maintained some discipline.

The vast menu is affordable and filling-the perfect “cheap eats”.

Dishes I tried:

Venezuelan farmer’s cheese, tomato, avocado, and mojito dressing on a fresh baquette roll with a nice clean side salad.Delicious, and coupled with their black bean soup with cilantro and sides of hot sauce or nata (sour cream)…divine!
