Horrible Service
We recently moved to the Financial District. My partner and I like to support neighborhood establishments so we thought we would give Giardino D’Oro a try last night since we love Italian food. Wow, were we surprised at the treatment we received. I had no more opened the front door before the waiter barked at me to remove my hat…nice greeting. It was cold out, but of course I had planned to remove my cap on the way to the table.
We sat and I asked to view the wine list. The waiter said they did not have one and begin to rattle off types of wines they served. He was so rude that we felt we needed to inform someone of his behavior. We noticed a fellow waiter nearby and explained to him that our server was abrupt and rude. He replied, “So what do you want me to do about it?” Shocking. There was only one other table occupied in the place and one would think they would be happy for the business, especially in this trying economy.
So, we decided to leave and go somewhere else nearby. We went to Les Halles on John Street. From the moment we opened the door, the energy was completely different. The hostess and waitress were so lovely and we had a quick, delicious meal.
On our way home we passed Giardino D’Oro and the gate was already pulled and closed for business. Perhaps the staff just wanted to leave early and did not want to accomodate another table, but hopefully the owner of this establishment will see this and take action…before his staff puts him out of business!"

Travel to Venezuela without leaving the New York!
I love to travel, but in this dreadful economy I have decided to postpone trips and find alternatives to transport me to exotic locales. I discovered El Cocotero in Chelsea on a quiet side street (18th St to be exact).
Upon opening the door, I felt like I had landed in Venezuela. The lively music, colorful decor, and friendly staff reminded me of a tropical street cafe where one could lounge, socialize while drinking native drinks.
Being a vegetarian I am usually a bit worried trying Latin cuisine, but their extentsive menu did not disappoint. Arepas, areapa, arepas! The authentic corn meal treats are stuffed with Venezuelan farmer’s cheese and black beans. Sandwiches and salads galore. Neighboring tables’ orders could tempt even the most devoted of vegetarians, but luckily I maintained some discipline.
The vast menu is affordable and filling-the perfect “cheap eats”.
Dishes I tried:
vegetariano sandwich
Venezuelan farmer’s cheese, tomato, avocado, and mojito dressing on a fresh baquette roll with a nice clean side salad.Delicious, and coupled with their black bean soup with cilantro and sides of hot sauce or nata (sour cream)…divine!
