A local maxima for Chinese food in Seattle

I was looking for a great little Chinese brunch out and heard this place was good. We tried quite a few dishes, but nothing matched my past weekend at Joy’s in Foster City, CA.

Dishes I tried:

Savory Soy Milk

  • 2.0 star rating
  •

Savory soy milk with bits of fried dough, dried shrimp, and dried pork.

Not the best. I should have asked for hot sauce.

Fritter of twisted dough

This is usually one of my favorites. However, ours were overfried to the point of inedibility. My friend’s was so hard, she couldn’t squeeze it between her fingers. They weren’t hard enough to use as weapons, but they weren’t good to eat either.

Baked bread with green onion

The english title is very different from the chinese title. Trust the english. This dish bears little resemblance to what I was thinking.

Pan fried leek bun

This was actually pretty good. A steamed bun with leeks and eggs was pan fried to a nice crispiness. The tastiest of our items.

How could I forget dessert?

My follow-up review for this restaurant. Read my previous review for this restaurant here

Dessert was great. In fact, it is pretty clear this is Sue’s specialty. i had the sorbet.

Going just for dessert and drinks would be just fine.

Dishes I tried:

Sorbet

The 3 flavors of sorbet (mango, strawberry, lime) were separated by layers of meringue. The highlight was the 3 pieces of marzipan. Sue is famous for them and I was impressed. The strawberry was awesome.

A lunch-time staple.

I work nearby at Amazon, so I may be a bit jaded.
Shanghai Garden gets 4 stars though for being good food and clean. I’ve taken candidates here for interviews many times. I’ve tried about half the things on the menu.

A nice hidden treat.

This place is tucked upstairs and missed by most people wandering around the ID. They are missing out on some solid eats.

Dishes I tried:

Chicken Katsu Curry over Rice

  • 4.0 star rating
  •
  •
  •
  •
  •

The katsu isn’t overbreaded or overfried. The curry is nicely flavored and not too watery. Ask for more pickles.

The Trickster's Trunk ... a poor man's cirque

We came for a xmas present and it was a good experience, but I’d rate it decent to good.

The performance is reasonably entertaining. The trickster himself is by far the best performer. Some of the local and rotating talent are hit or miss.

As far as dinner, the appetizer was good, but ended up only eating a few bites of my poorly cut and overcooked steak.

If you attend, get the seafood.

Dishes I tried:

Steak

This was one of the worst steak’s I’ve had and far below what I would expect. Overcooked, poorly cut, and unpalatable. The staff came by and asked how the meal was. I told them the steak was terrible. She said I was a big boy and should eat up.

A decent burger, but better rings

After reading the PI column where Tom Douglas and others list Red Mill as a guilty pleasure, I decided I had to come.

Well, I did and wasn’t all that impressed. It’s far enough out of the way to be a destination, but after visitng, I can’t say it was worth the effort. I’d rather get Dick’s.

Dishes I tried:

BBQ Burger

The burger was decent, but nothing special. It’s probably only notable given the lack of good competition in Seattle. The BBQ burger was worse than most because the mediocre sauce drowns out the burger and melts the bun.

Onion rings

The onion rings were the best thing we ordered. Nicely battered and fried deftly to seem not-greasy, I enjoyed our small pile of oniony goodness.

A bit runny, but ice cream and chocolate syrup can only be so bad. :) mmm.

My favorite restaurant in Seattle

I’ve been here numerous times and it has never disappointed.

One strange moment was seeing Danny Glover eating at a table by the window.

Nice place, on the pricy side

I ate at Nell’s with a group of 6 on a Wed night and it was a very good experience. It wasn’t too crowded and the food generally impressed.

Dishes I tried:

Crab Salad

This salad wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t that good either. Given the price and the alternatives, choose something else.

One of the dishes they are known for. A very nice starter with great flavor.

The pork was great. It was tender and well flavored. My date even nabbed 2 of my pieces.
