This guy I used to date took me here once. I had the steak au poivre and he had a huge ass burger. It was really good, but wasn’t the best I’ve had. I had a helluva time picking the peppercorns out of my mouth, but it was delicious nonetheless.

I passed by this place once when I was wandering around St. Marks. It looked pretty cute and crowded and thought maybe I’d try it. The chalkboard on the sidewalk claimed to have the best cuban food in NYC. Once inside, I had the ropa vieja which is shredded beef with yellow rice. My beef was WAY too chewy and the rice was hard and cold in the middle, indicating that it was microwaved. While some reviewers say this place is worth the trip, I strongly disagree. I definitely will not be coming back here.

This place is pretty decent if you’re not too picky about your food. It’s basically a ramen house and the food isn’t bad at all. People don’t come here for the atmosphere but I’ll give it points for cleanliness. The drawback is that they don’t accept credit cards and there’s no sushi offered. While you can probably make this on your own at home, I think it may just be a little more flavorful if you don’t mind paying a little extra for ramen. It’s not exactly instant noodle, but it’s close.

I love Go! It’s one of the cheapest Japanese places you’ll ever experience. The location is great as it is right in the heart of St. Marks. I love their cheap sushi, the salmon salad, and of course the fried ice cream. On colder days, I’ll add a bowl of udon. The service and food is pretty consistent so that keeps me coming back. Good cheap food just the way I like it.

Mmm.. yakitori. I’ve been here serveral times and I mostly go just for a few drinks and something to munch on. The price is pretty decent and while the waiters didn’t seem to understand too much of what we were saying, they managed to serve us all the same. As others have mentioned, the space is a bit tight so you might not want to come with a crowd of people, but for 2 or 3 people, it’s still a good time.

While Yakitori Taisho is a couple of doors down and is very similar to Oh! Taisho, I like Oh! Taisho more because the skewers are cooked exactly to my liking. It’s really cheap and good for big groups too. While I also experienced a language barrier here, it helps that the menu has pictures so you can point out exactly what you want. Delicious bbq. Great drinking or after-party spot.

This place is decent for noodles. I don’t really remember the sushi being that great, and also not cheap, but the soba is good (if you like soba.) Cold soba is quite refreshing and that’s pretty much all I can say about it. I wanted to give this place 2.5 stars, because I think it’s better than 2 stars, but maybe it needs to try a little harder for 3 stars.

I really like this place but my bf isn’t really a big fan of places that don’t serve sushi. I haven’t been here in a minute, but I remember eating the rice dishes here and thought they were pretty good even though Sobaya is a noodle house. I came back here again and tried the soba and it was extremely fresh as well as refreshing. I should come here more often, but I prefer to go during the colder months.

Minado now goes by the name of Todai. Both are sushi buffets and for the price they’re charging, I think it’s extremely worth it if you like sushi rolls and seafood in excess. While the sushi is not simply amazing, you get what you pay for. I often seperate the fish from the rice and just eat the fish. There’s also an assortment of other foods such as hibachi and crab legs and a decent selection of desserts as well. Go hungry and get your money’s worth (at least 3-4 plates)

I’m a big shabu shabu fan. I really love hot pot, especially during the colder months. This place often gets packed so make sure you arrive early if you don’t want to wait over half an hour in the freezing cold as there is really no waiting area. The staff will help you if you don’t know exactly what to do and it’s healthier than Japanese bbq. (Although I believe there is a grilling option as well) Nonetheless, I love a bowl of yummy hot soup.
