Village Pizza

Village pizza: A real pizzaria
I’m from New Jersey, where we take our pizza seriously, and I was pleased when we moved her to find Village Pizza where they do too. We probably have a pizza there once a month. The sandwiches are good; the pasta is even better. The garlic cheese bread is delicious. But the crown jewel is the pizza. My wife likes cheese, and the fact that plain pizza is so good attests to the quality of their crust and sauce, but I like some meat on my pizza. Their pepperoni and their sausage are great. Watch out if you ask for the meat lovers though, they basically throw everything you would find in a deli on there. It’s a heart attack on a pie! I love this place.
Try the ice cream store next door and then go to a movie a the theater around the corner, for a complete night out.

Le Bistro

Very good
We’ve been here twice now, once for brunch and once for dinner. Both were delightful. I was very pleased with the veal. The owner is pleasant and attentive. The paintings are nice to look at, and the entry courtyard is charming. We had the house merlot which for $5 was surprisingly good. I was a little disappointed with the French Onion soup. The soup itself was delicious, really very good. The presentation was also nice but the pastry on top was, I think, a mistaken departure from the traditional baked cheese on bread.

Monterey Bay Canners
Aug 6, 2007
Dinner on the warf
Monterey Bay Canners is new to me so I asked for a recommendation from the waitress, she was very helpful and made several recommendations. The first was a white fish covered in nuts (almonds?) I can’t remember the name of the dish but it was delicious. The salad came with baby shrimp on it and it was very good too. I also liked the bread. I think it was sourdough. We had to ask for another basket because we ate so much.
My wife had a steak, which she ordered medium, but it came well done. She was less pleased with the restaurant then I was.
Eat outside or ask for a view of the water, that’s what makes this restaurant really worth the trip. We could watch the boats coming in for the evening with the sun setting behind them. Very pleasant.

Yard House Restaurant

Good
Came here with a group of guys, and I had the unfortunate job of being the DD. They all seemed to enjoy their beers, a lot. The “hobgoblin” was a favorite; pretty soon nearly everyone was drinking that.
We had dinner too. The nachos were nothing special, but that’s ok because I saved room for the Lamb Chops, which were fantastic. I don’t know what was in the sauce that came with them but it was addictive. A friend had the shrimp and base on the few tastes they were very good too. Everyone seemed to like their meal.
The atmosphere was also a lot of fun, a little yuppie but mostly people out to have fun. We certainly did.

Fish House Vera Cruz
Jul 16, 2007
Sunday Night
I like Carlsbad a lot and so I thought a fish house on the beach might be nice. Turns out Vera Cruz is a ways from the shore but we were able to drive down and go for a walk on the beach after dinner.
Our party of five took 30 minutes to seat and there is little room to sit while waiting around outside. Which is a pity as it was a lovely evening. Some drinks and an outdoor waiting area would have made the wait very pleasant.
Once sat I had the monkfish and my wife had the tilapia. The monkfish was excellent and the tilapia was “average.” Most of our party enjoyed their meals but no one was wowed.
You get choices of sides, tomatoes sounded like a good idea to 4 out of five of us and then we saw someone walking by with strawberries. We should have gotten that. The tomatoes looked like something you would find on a Wendy’s hamburger.
Service was efficient and attentive; the ambiance was sort of red lobsteresq.

Estrella's Family Restaurant

Meh
We had dinner there about a week ago. The patio was all right and so was the food, but nothing special. The TV on the patio was blaring but none of the mostly over fifty and Caucasian crowd seemed to mind.
The authentic Mexican food was certainly Mexican but lacked that pride of preparation I generally associate with authenticity. There is another Mexican place down the street in the shopping center by the Chinese place. It’s also pretty gringo but the food and environment are far superior.

Cask 'n Cleaver Steakhouse

Good
The steak was good. And the setting, in a little grotto by the creek on the way to Fallbrook, is nice. The restaurant décor is a little dated and the wait staff is either in or just out of high school, but they are well managed. All our food and other items arrived promptly.
The prices were reasonable and the food was good. I liked the fresh potato chips.
