Gato Bizco Cafe
Aug 30, 2007
I LOVE THIS PLACE!
This place is one of my favorite restaurants of all time. It’s in my old neighborhood and independently owned. Patterson, the owner, is just awesome and everyone who works for him is, too.
They have excellent breakfast, some mexican, and a little bit of lunch-type stuff. They are open until 3:00 and closed on Tuesdays. You can alter the dishes any way you like and they will accommodate you.
When I lived in Atlanta, I used to eat at this place several times a month. Sometimes every weekend. I can’t recommend this place highly enough. It’s really special to me.
Instead of waiting in line forever to eat across the street at the Flying Biscuit, give Gato Bizco a try. They aren’t as fancy as the Biscuit but you will get a great meal for a great price and with a smile.
The name is Spanish for “Cross-eyed Cat” and he named it that because of a little cross-eyed cat that hung around when they were moving in to the place. There is cat stuff all over the restaurant. It’s so cute.

huevos rancheros
Scrambled eggs and white cheese inside two small flour tortillas on a bed of amazing black beans, with red salsa on one and green on the other. Topped with sour cream if you like. Excellent.
-
Omelette
They really put a lot of cheese in them. You can get all the normal fillings, including real sausage and soysage. Super.
-
Taco
Fresh, fresh ingredients. Very good.
-
Burrito
Huge, fresh, delicious.
Ken's Japanese Restaurant

you get what you pay for
I found this sushi place to be very inexpensive, but you also don’t get much fish with your sushi.
I had some rolls and also some nigiri. The rolls were small and had very little fish inside them. The nigiri was fair. All in all, I think that this is a great place for college students (it’s very close to Vandy) to go to who don’t really know what really good sushi tastes like, or can’t afford it.
Rosepepper Cantina

disappointing
I asked around East Nashville for the best Mexican place and everyone was very enthusiastic about Rosepepper Cantina. I went there for lunch and found it to be a big letdown.
I ordered a chicken enchilada and the chicken had absolutely no flavor. It was definitely not marinated or cooked with any kind of seasoning. The enchilada sauce was ok but it was covered with cream sauce so the flavor was diluted. I had to pour all the salsa that came with the chips to get a little flavor with the dish.
For dessert, I had their flan. I am addicted to flan and have had it in a million restaurants. This was, by far, the worst I’ve had. It tasted like it was made with water. It was flavorless and had an odd texture. They say it’s home made. I feel bad for knocking the restaurant since everyone seems to love it, but I really had a poor meal.
I understand they have excellent margaritas, but I didn’t have one. I have also been told that chicken is not the thing to order. I will go back again, probably, and try something else.

Chicken enchiladas especial
Chicken had no flavor.
-
Flan
This was the worst flan I’ve ever had, and I’ve had a lot of flan. I didn’t think it was possible to get bad flan but I was wrong.

Italia Pizza & Pasta

very nice people, but i've had better
This place is a 2-minute walk from my house. I have eaten there twice. The people who own it/work there are VERY nice. However, I have found the food to be mediocre.
They have pizzas and stromboli along with some greek food. They were out of the tabbouleh both times we ate there, three weeks apart. The second time, they were also out of the babaganoush.
I ordered a specialty pizza with no mushrooms but with olives and I got no green peppers and extra mushrooms.
I think it would be better if the sauce was tastier. I have decided the sauce is a lot of what’s wrong with the pizza and strombolis.
So, like I said, since it’s so close and since the people are so friendly, it’s tempting to eat there,
but I’m branching out and trying to find some better takeout/delivery italian in my neighborhood.

Pizza
I don’t like the sauce that much. Pretty bland. Sparse toppings and incorrect order.
-
Stromboli
Kind of dry, don’t like the sauce, not enough cheese by far.
