Zuppa
Oct 24, 2007
*drool*
Zuppa is one of my favorite restaurants in town. My wife is a huge fan of the she-crab soup, but she can write her own review of that. Soups are their specialty, but I can vouch that their burgers and sandwiches are both good.
Portions are generous, and pretty cheap, although the entrees trend a bit smaller and more expensive.
Cocktails are recommended.
I understand that the line is out the door during lunch, so try to get there early and dodge the crowds or come at dinner time.

Cuban Barbecue Sandwich
Piled high, with mustard and cheese on their delicious bread. I am drooling thinking about it.

Virginia Barbeque

Solid Barbeque
Virginia and North Carolina style Barbeque served here. Friendly service, small place, local clientèle.
You could do a lot worse finding a place for lunch in the Bryan Park area, maybe before some disc golf.
Don’t miss the hush puppies! Delicious.

Nile Ethiopian Restaurant

An unexpected treat.
Before I ate here, I had no exposure to Ethiopian food. After I looked at the menu, I was not sure what I was going to get. I left very satisfied, and with a unique lunch experience.
The ambiance is good, and the service was very helpful. Don’t be afraid to let them guide you.
I was there with my wife and a group of several friends (including an infant), and the total bill was less than $60. The food is served family style on large plates, atop the Ethiopian equivalent of pita bread.
Give it a try if you’re looking for a new experience in the VCU area!

Honey Whyte's All American Cafe

Great bar, great food
The service is wonderful.
The food is extremely good, I consider it the best place in town for burgers now (beating out Cheeburger Cheeburger).
The only moderate downsides is that the atmosphere may not be to the general taste. (It is a bar.) I happen to love it.
It’s also closed a bit more often than you’d expect, especially for dinner. Call before you go to make sure.

Extra Billy's BarBQ

Solid food, questionable service
I went for lunch with a co-worker. The food was pretty good, including the best BBQ sausage I’ve had in town, but the waitress definitely seemed like she’d rather be doing something else. I am normally a big tipper, but this was not an inspiring performance.

Kabuto Japanese Steak House

Standard Hibachi
If you’ve never had Hibachi, try it, you’ll probably like it.
If you have had Hibachi, you know what you’re getting here. Very standard, and they’re not trying to cut you a break on the price.
The environment is a bit odd. A few of the guests at our table were distracted by the smoke; there are no vents above the grill.
It still gets four stars because the food was very good.

Filet and Shrimp
Yum! The filet was especially good.

One of the best fully-liquored drinks I’ve had. Two of these will indeed deliver a mighty blow to your sobriety.

River City Diner

This is a true diner
Family pictures on the wall, waitresses that know how to mix personality with work ethic, bustling and alive—this is the sort of place you could get used to eating.
Nothing I had was spectacular, but everything I had was very good. I’d pay a return visit without thinking twice.

Sushi even haters will appreciate
OK, so I don’t hate sushi, but I’ve never really been able to eat it. I have vegetable concerns.
The sushi here is great to me.
If you can, be a regular. I thought the value proposition was excellent, although the martinis are a little steep.

One of the jewels of the Fan
Bring your date. I’m stealing the phrase, but this is truly the “little black dress” of the fan. Classy, but with attitude. The food is delicious, whether you’re going for a burger or some wonderful seafood.
In my experience, the waitstaff has excellent wine knowledge, be sure to take advantage.

Firebird's
Nov 4, 2006
Excellent mid-priced meal
Considering its location in Short Pump mall, the atmosphere at Firebird’s is exceptionally comforting. Wood and leather are used to fine effect, making the spacious restaurant feel quite cozy. Suitable for business or a family meal.
The menu is primarily American, although there are some dishes with some southwestern flair.
Don’t miss Monday nights with half-price bottles of wine! The house red it really quite good.
-
Chile-rubbed Delmonico
The only thing that would make this offering better is if they offered the filet prepared this way. The chilis are mild, but add a wonderful smoky spice to a fine steak.
