Correction: Not Mexican!

Azuca is not the average “Mexican” restaurant. It’s actually a combination of Latin and Central American mixed with the flavors of the Caribbean. It’s divided into two separate buildings. The building on the left is the restaurant and the building to the right is the bar. The decor is not super fancy but I was a fan of the ceiling lights as they reminded of the colorful glass flowered ceiling of the Bellagio in Vegas (of course, not to that magnitude – see uploaded picture).

It was a little more expensive than the average Mexican cuisine especially given the twist of flavors as above but overall, I enjoyed the service and the food. I’m also a fan of their website!

Appetizer Sampler

Good for a group of 5 people to share. Comes with chorizo, tostones or fried slices of plantains, shrimp and ceviche (cold dish that tastes like salsa and seafood).

Baja Salad with Blackened Tuna

There are a variety of salads to choose from. By themselves, they are in the $8-9 range but adding any meats eg salmon, shrimp, tuna, or chicken adds extra. Baja salad was one of the few salads that did not have iceburg lettuce (which by the way, the restaurant allows substitutions with other veggies eg spinach). It was a mix of greens and black beans, which went well with their vinagrette dressing. My favorite part was definitely the large blackened tuna steak placed on top of my salad. It was seared well on the outside with enough fresh flavor in the middle.

Warm Mango Cobbler

Warm crust, chunks of mango topped with dulce de leche ice cream – great way to end the meal! My mangojito complemented it well too!

Mojitos or Caipirinhas anyone?

I just love Southtown…this is a great find on Alamo – there is a restaurant to the left and and a bar to the right…the buildings are separated by a walkway to a courtyard in the back…awesome place to unwind with a cocktail, listen to live music on the weekends, and enjoy the flamenco dancers…the food is excellent…they call it Nuevo Latino…a blend of Mexico, the Carribbean and Latin America…they bring you out steaming hot corn bread…OMG…be careful or you will fill up on it before you get your food! I had the Arepa appetizer…unbelievably delicious! For dinner I had the Sea Bass…it was excellent! One day I will try dessert if I can ever save room!!!

Simply fabulous coconut shrimp

I have never had coconut shrimp before, so I do not have much to compare it to, however, I would come back here JUST for those little tender guys. They are soft and juicy yet crisp on the outside with the perfect amount of sweet tang. …
