Finally a Thai restaurant in the area

I tend to measure a Thai restaurant by its Pad Thai, both because it’s my favorite, and because if you can’t that get right you probably won’t make any other Thai food well. Most times I’ve had it the noodles are wide and flat, at Basil they use very narrow ones — the flavor isn’t affected, though. We were also intrigued by the soup options and chose Tom Kha Gai (a coconut milk broth with chicken and mushrooms), which came in a pretty tureen for us to share. Touches like that, as well as the decor and bar, mark this as a rather upscale Thai restaurant. Luckily the food comes up to the same level. We look forward to returning for lunch another time to try the chef’s special duck dishes.

One final (important) note: there are a lot of vegetarian and gluten-free options on their menu, clearly marked as such. Kudos to any restaurant that strives to meet dietary restrictions like that!

Pad Thai

The sauce was excellent, warm without too much spice. Chicken and shrimp pieces were large and tasty. Could have been larger, but was excellent as a lunch portion and part of a multi-course meal.

Tom Kha Gai (Coconut Chicken)

The soups are served in a tureen, enough to be shared between two (or really even four if you’re not greedy). The broth is a sweet mix of coconut and lime and some other amazing flavors, with tasty chicken and mushrooms.
