After hearing a lot about Cluny, and passing by its cute facade multiple times, I went there for brunch a week ago with my girlfriend and a friend of mine visiting from out of town. Upon entering, I was immediately greeted by a snotty, model-wannabe hostess who told me that “there are no tables for 3 in the back room, so I have to sit you here,” pointing to the worst table in the house (by the bathroom/busy hallway). I replied that while walking by I had seen plenty of empty tables in the other, more superior room. She hesitatingly brought me there (but gave us the worst table in that room as well, nearest to the kitchen but luckily separated by a divider). Not a very great start. Anyhow, my friend is allergic to eggs and nuts (and dairy) so he asked politely if the steel cut oats had almonds in it (since it came with apricots also). The waiter said yes, but that it was impossible to separate the almonds with the fruit, so my friend just asked for th oats with berries. I wasn’t starving so my girlfriend and I shared the french toast (supposedly legendary) and yogurt with berries. A little while later, the waiter returned to say that the apricots CAN be separated from the nuts, and so he had changed my friend’s order (which was fine). Then, he brought us out some coffee (7 out of 10) and water (annoyed that we hadn’t ordered bottled). Finally, our food came. The french toast was good, but it was small (three halves) and had about 7 berries on it. The yogurt and berries was tiny. Overall, we hadn’t come there that hungry but we left hungry. The oats were mediocre. Maybe I should have ordered the poached eggs with short rib hash (my roommate raves about it), but I wasn’t feeling in the mood for meet and eggs. Our portion (french toast, yogurt, two coffees) of the bill with tip and tax came to almost $40. To boot, the brunch menu items, though most of the items are exactly from the breakfast menu, are about $2-$3 more expensive simply because you bought them on a Sunday (everything is a la carte). I think the menupages.com reviews are right when most of them complain of the restaurant being “overpriced,” “below expectations,” “no wow factor,” “so-so,” and “disappointing.” (those reviews were the first 5 on the menupages Cafe Cluny page) I certainly felt that way, and in a town with numerous choices for brunch (choices that have bigger portions, better prices, and meals that almost always come with coffee and/or juice), I will have to give Cluny a miss.
