Corner Cuban-Mexican Cafe of My Dreams

When I go too long without savoring some of Cafe Habana’s mouthwatering grilled corn with chili powder, cotija cheese, and lime, it starts showing up in my dreams with disturbing regularity. Eventually I head downtown and brave the crowds to snag a table at this tiny eatery, and I remember that it’s not just the corn that’s incredible. The salads are fresh and complex, the tlacoyo de tresmarias a perfect indulgence with goat cheese and masa, the skirt steak smoky and flavorful.

Wash it all down with some tall mojitos, and then move on out, because someone is definitely waiting for your table.

Grilled Corn Mexican Style

The most incredible combination of corn, cheese, and spiciness ever concocted, this grilled corn is the stuff that dreams are made of – all too literally, in my case.

Ensalada De Mango

This salad is a great entree when you want to save all your indulgence for the corn. The mango and jicama add a nice sweetness and crunch respectively to the basic salad, which is always composed of perfect produce.

Tlacoyo de Tresmarias

This ‘boat’ made of masa contains a wealth of goat cheese that warms the insides and the soul. There’s enough on the plate for two, if you’re stoic enough to attempt sharing.

Great cuban food

This is the best cuban that I’ve eaten. The seating is a little cramped, but it’s worth dealing with just for the food. The cuban sandwich was superb, particularly the pork. The huevos rancheros steak was done perfectly. The corn (which is what draw many people) lives up to expectations, making normal corn seem bland and flavorless.

Tiacoyo Con Tres Maria

A great non-meaty dish. Corn boat stuffed with cheese, beans, and some other things.

Huevos Rancheros

Steak was perfect, and topped with a tortilla and two eggs.

Corn: good. Entrees: bland and overpriced, but then again I didn’t have high hopes for Mexican food in Soho.

Yes, the food here is far better than your tab would care to admit. Cafe Habana is: elbow-to-elbow, pardon-me-please-repeat, unpretentious-decor-focus-on-the-food Cuban goodness.

The corn is unbelievable, and overall, the menu is tasty and surprisingly cheap. The wait can be really long at night because locals pack the place at all waking hours. But they still have great service and their cocktails (read: mojitos and margaritas) are super fresh and more than welcome once you finally get in. I personally think the SoHo location makes it a great, cost-effective place to drop into while shopping.

The grilled Mexican style corn? YUM. I mean…it’s just good, sooo good. Sadly, its preparation can be a bit inconsistent. At worst…it can be an overly charred undercooked disaster, but when its done just right…its just a tiny bit of heaven. The Cuban sandwich is really great, their little mixed fruit juice thing is super yummy, and the chicken with mole sauce is alright. But its that grilled marinated steak that was the entree surprise. It was amazingly flavorful and just beautifully tender, and for that price ($12)? It’s a steal fo’ sho’. Overally, a classic / cult New York staple (that corn!), and if I lived closer, I’d be eating that corn all the time yo…And don’t forget, if the wait for the cafe is too long, just head around the corner to the outpost.

order their corn which we’ve lovingly named ‘crack on a stick’ because that’s exactly what it is. their other food is delicious too but Crack on a Stick is their money maker.

The corn is great. The rice is very flavorful and usually outshines the main dishes. The steak is good for the price you are paying.
