Funky, Hunk 'A Sandwich Place

Café Santropol has the most original selection of sandwiches in town.

I love this funky little hang-out. The decor is kitschy, the people are your usual cool Plateau artsy-types. The have a really lovely garden terrace in the back in the summer. It feels like having a bite to eat in someone’s lovely backyard.

But the food is yum. And a selection of really original combos.

Hankering for something sweet?

Try the Hazel Brown sandwich: cream cheese, hazelnut butter and chocolate spread. Or maybe the Sweet Roots, with grated carrots, raisins, coriander, nuts and mayo, topped with fresh apple slices.

Or try their Santropol Special, with sliced roast beef, on blue cheese, with cream cheese spread.

Being a big cheese fan, one of my faves is the Duluth Avenue, with brie and blue cheese spread, topped with tomato slices. You can add some ham to that, if you crave a touch of meat with your cheese.

Oh and their Club Sandwiches? There is a reason why they called them the “Monsters”. They are HUGE. So HUGE it’s actually hard to lift the sandwich with your 2 hands. You might be tempted to take a fork and knife to it – they’re that big.

All the ingredients are fresh.

Oh a word of warning: they don’t accept credit cards.

It’s a nice tasty cozy place to while away a sunny Sunday afternoon.

With the ham, it’ll be $9.75.

Granola Chic

If you’re looking for a funky and charming cafe this is the place to go. My favourite plate is called Le Farfelu, you get a mixture of bread sticks, crackers and bread and you choose 2 homemade cream cheeses. Yum! I’ve also tried the onion tart, and while it was good, I don’t think I need to have it again. Their sandwiches are huge and very unique. They also have a huge drink selection with lots of teas and syrups so you can have a shake, a soda or a diabolo (plus many other options).
