A strange unique place to eat with a oldie juke box in the middle of the floor. A strange group hangs out that having going there for years. A super loaded menu with many selections of sandwich’s and doggie’s something for everyone I tell,,,,give this long time spot a chance to please your tummy cause it’s YUMMY

It's like dying and going to greasy-spoon heaven
If you got that creak in your stomach that needs greasing, Carter’s on Fort Street is the quickie-lube for you. Don’t bother with a menu or a credit card, you’re there for the burgers or coney dogs and you should have enough spare change in your car to cover the bill. This place is a Downriver classic. No booths or tables, just one winding counter with swivel stools. No nostalgic memorabilia hanging on the walls, this place don’t need ‘em, it’s the real deal. I’ve been going there since the 70’s and I don’t think one thing has been changed. Why mess with perfection?
There are two main secrets to Carter’s: Mel on the grill and The Grill. Something about decades of diced onions and fresh meat being flipped that just seeps in flavor that can’t be recreated any other way. Mel is a master with the spatula and very friendly and engaging, as is Bonnie who is your steady server Tuesday through Saturday (she gets Sunday off and they’re closed on Monday). The only complaint I can muster up is that they close at 3PM, but hey, if they were open any later they’d need a 2nd shift and then you might miss out on the dynamic duo of Mel & Bonnie.
The burgers and coneys are cheap, the fries are great, and if you go early enough you can get Downriver’s best breakfast (also inexpensive). Grab a few bucks and an appetite and get over there before they close. If you’re dining alone, don’t bother bringing a paper to read, they’ve got that covered for you. Just plop yourself down on one of those ancient stools, keep the calorie-counter in your pocket and treat yourself to the best authentic greasy spoon in the Detroit area. Trust me, there is nothing else even close.
