Perhaps one of the better lunch restaurants in Lafeview, the specials really are special. Salads are fresh, and lunches are prepared with an eye to detail. It’s not a fancy place, catering to many private high school students across the street as well a medical professionals next door. The biggest problem is the lack of either a manager or expediter. I’ve starting showing the counter people that I’m now timing the service with my iPhone. You order at a counter, pay, then seat yourself. There’s a tip basket at the register, but I strongly recommend you hold your tip until you are served, then leave it at the table. They have some of the best red beans and rice in town, but it can take from 10 minutes to 25 minutes to get yours, with no explanation. Service seems to be getting much better, though, with the 10-minute time frame becoming standard. I normally tip at least 20%, sometimes more, for full service, but here I tip 10%, which is standard for a place that does half the work, i.e., you order at the counter and they bring it to you. They do not return to ask how the meal is or if you want a drink refresh; it’s not that fancy of a place but the quality is reliably good.
