Clementine Articles — Things To Know Before You Go
In the U.S., sandwiches are as ubiquitous as they are delicious. But it turns out that sandwiches, in all of their various, glorious forms, are popular all over the world. From Danish smørrebrød to...read more

Yummy and local
Positive: great space, quick service, attractive decor, friendly service, tasty sandwiches, great tarragon potato salad, fun signage. Drawbacks: We got there at 3PM when they apparently were starting to transition to dinner and they were out of anything hot. We only wanted sandwiches so it wasn’t the end of the world (I bet their mac & cheese is good though, it looked like that sort of place) but they were also out of “basil lime elixir” and a couple of other things. My roast beef sandwich (with tomato-onion jam, Munster & horseradish sauce) was tasty but I wish the meat went to all corners of the bread. My husband had a sandwich with bacon, asparagus and avocado that was tasty but a bit on the skimpy side.

Like a teenager on drugs, it wants to be good but can't.
We live in the area, so decided to try Clementine for lunch on Valentine’s Day. I just want to start off by saying that I was determined to like this place. I steadfastly ordered my companion to overlook the following until the bitter end.
We seated ourselves, waited for more than 15 minutes to be acknowledged, then another 10 minutes for someone to brusquely take our orders. She was in such a rush as to forget to ask us what we wanted to drink. She ran off before we could stop her. 10 more minutes, and one sandwich was delivered. The other was rumored to follow shortly….
During the wait, we watched 3 groups leave after waiting without being acknowledged or greeted in any way. At some point, another waitress showed up and was literally bellowed at by a man behind the counter. Everyone in the restaurant kind of looked up, concerned. A while later, I was able to catch our waitress to ask where the other sandwich was. She seemed in a state of disbelief that the sandwich wasn’t there. My companion then told her not to worry about it at this point, we were ready to go. Things got weird. She got really loud, apologizing, raving about how it was her fault, and stormed off, reappearing with the sandwich that had been sitting behind the counter. We said, really, please don’t worry about it. It’s okay. Can we get the check? She would not calm down. Apologizing is the right thing to do in this type of situation. Raving on and on in a loud voice in front of a room full of patrons, having a meltdown about your crazy day is another thing all together. I don’t know how many times we tried to say "it’s okay – no problem, please don’t worry about it ". She finally went away.
Now to the real disappointment. I have dealt with establishments that pride themselves on terrible service, where people will still show up in droves because the food is so good. Clementine will not be one of these places. The mac-n-cheese was cool in the center, the tomatoes on my sandwich were clearly past the “serve-by” date (gross). Other than that, the carrot salad was tasty and interesting.
Considering the location and the clientele, the success of this place should be a no-brainer. It could use an intervention and possibly rehab.
