Not Just Superb Diner Food- Some Of The Best Food In Town.

I love this place. Doylestown is so over-stuffed with restaurants that try too hard, cost a ton and aren’t that good. What this is is a relaxed, busy place that’s one of the best places to eat, period. No dinners, unfortunately, just breakfast and lunch.

If you want regular diner food they have it, but your eggs will be cooked in real butter and in season your omelette fillings are likely to be locally grown. The bread is good. The coffee is good. They have a sense of humor (they have fun naming their specials).

The place is well-run and clean. They’re always busy, but they know how to get you in and out pretty quickly.

Now for the other part: they have creative specials using top-quality ingredients that are in no way Diner Food. Here are a few from memory and from looking at their Twitter: Kirk’s Omelet: prosciutto, slow-roasted plum tomatoes, shiitake mushrooms, sharp provolone, green onion and kale ($9.50)

Once I had a fabulous smoked pork sandwich there… it was years ago, and I still remember it. They had smoked the pork themselves. It was on a good roll. It was tender, moist, just-the-right-amount-of-smoky, and came with a side of apple slaw.

They make the most wonderful cornmeal-buttermilk pancakes.
Everything there is made from scratch. They have good soups, chili, big salads that come with a lot of pretty veggies….

They took over the place around five years ago (I’ve been eating there since the beginning) from the previous owners who had turned the place from a lousy, dirty greasy spoon into the fabulous restaurant that it now is. They had the good sense not to mess with what was great about it, but at the same time to do their own thing within the formula of great casual food and interesting specials.

It’s on busy 313 on the edge of Doylestown. It seems daunting to get in, but I find that I never have to wait long for some nice driver to stop and make a space for me to turn in.

Yes, you can get a less expensive breakfast or lunch in town. If you don’t care or can’t tell the difference between quality and dreck, then by all means go ahead!

Cornmeal-buttermilk pancakes

They are way too good. Just try them. I sometimes just get a single one on the side with my eggs… I think that’d be $2.50. They’re so buttery and difficult to resist. They’ve been making them since when the place first opened with the original owners. Too good to change. They’re perfect.

A hundred or so wonderful scrambles and omelettes

There’s no way I can remember them all, but I know some of what’s been in them at different times is local asparagus, fresh herbs, wonderful cheeses, and that they’re huge.

Deli-style things

One of the original owners was Jewish, and so there’s still a whitefish salad platter, a kosher salami scramble, a reuben, and good Jewish pickles. Where else in Doylestown can you get THAT?
