Good but not great

I have been here a couple of times. This is primarily a takeout restaurant, there are a few seats inside and a couple outside. A vacant restaurant next door is being renovated to become a more permanent seating area later this year. On really nice days, ask to borrow a picnic basket and take your munchies to the neighboring park.

On my last visit, I ordered two “meat and threes” plates. There was enough food for two meals each. It was well packed in plastic containers, and was still warm even after a 40-minute trip home. However I was disappointed with most of the sides. I didn’t order any sauce, because it was extra — on reflection, maybe a sauce would have livened things up a bit.

While I waited, the staff were very friendly and chatty. The owner talked about the renovation plans for next door, the lack of air conditioning, and the possible locations for a second branch. It was fun to watch the ginger beer and other drinks being made to order, shaken with ice in Mason jars.

I’d like to try a couple of other things on the menu, including their drinks. But overall not very impressed.

Fried Chicken

The small meal includes two pieces of chicken. The meat was quite moist, but the peppery coating was very soft, which I found unpleasant.

Pulled Pork

The tender meat was shredded and piled into the plate. It was just meat: not much sauce, and not too much flavor.

Hush Puppies

There are 6 little balls in a serving, with a healthy dose of spicy tartar sauce on top. They were very soft and fell apart when you ate them. I was expecting something more crunchy, as I have enjoyed elsewhere.

Cornbread

The cornbread was baked in an individual round pan. It was well done, almost burnt, and very salty. My dining companion noted that I make a better cornbread.

Sweet Potatoes

These were chopped roughly, with the skins still on, and cooked in a sweet brown sauce. They were barely recognizable as sweet potatoes when I lifted the lid. The texture was soft and unappealing, with the skin going a bit leathery. Better the next day, icy cold as a salad, but still not going to order this again.

Macaroni salad

This was the special of the day, and the best side that I tasted. The pasta was dressed with a ranch-type dressing and mixed with bits of colored peppers.
