Doe Run Inn Rocks!

This is a 200 year old former mill that became a restaurant 100 years ago. It has 4 dining rooms, 2 which have views of the creek and island, 1 with a mural of the creek, and 1 which shows the mill gears and hardware. The Inn is filled with antiques and is very rustic.

They serve comfort food and plenty of it. For the fried chicken, they soak it in a buttermilk brine and then douple dip it in seasoned flour. It’s crispy and very juicy. The country ham is served as thick slices with real red eye gravy. The brisket is braised all day and is fork tender.

They have a choice of 10 sides and cook them all (and everything else) in house.

The food takes a little time, but they’re cooking the chicken to order, so it can take 15 minutes just to cook. There are 4 homemade desserts on the menu, but today there were 9 desserts on the dessert board.

Fried chicken

The chicken was crispy and juicy. It seemed like huge pieces of chicken, but the manager said the buttermilk brine caused the chicken to plump up during cooking, which made it look larger. I’m not complaining. You could just pull off the crust and eat it or bite through the whole thing or just eat the meat. All are acceptable methods of gorging. I had a spring mix salad with the Inn’s original bleu cheese dressing (lots of bleu cheese with cottage cheese!) which worked, oddly enough. The lettuce was fresh. I also had mac and cheese and green beans. The mac was creamy and the green beans well flavored. Both were great.
