Best Chinese Take Out on the Westside

Ok, cheap and good anything on the Westside is an oxymoron until you try this literal “hole in the wall” chinese place called Dragon Palace.

AMBIANCE: Ok, who the hell goes to a chinese restaurant for ambiance? Its always dim in here, kinda like what an opium den must have looked like except without the smoke. There is no fishy game-y smell because there are no live fish in an aquarium at the entrance (hmm, does this mean their fish and meat are not fresh?!). You can totally tell its a family run mom and pop kind of place which is totally cool. Yes, they do speak English so it should be no problem getting what you want. But don’t expect them to get chit-chatty with you which is typical of chinese places.

LOCATION: Its located in the corner of this little strip mall on Yale and Santa Monica Blvd. They share a tiny lot that allows up to about a dozen or so cars. There’s a pretty popular Japanese discounty cafe next to it, so yeah, finding parking in this lot can be difficult. Else there’s plenty of metered parking avail on adjacent streets. The seating area is indoor only and has a capacity for about 40-50 people only. Tables are situated rather close so yeah, you’re gonna hear your neighbors’ conversation.

FOOD: Pretty damn good even if its American style Chinese food. Soo much better than Panda Inn or PF Chang’s. It may look ghetto, but its definitely not cheap cafeteria food. I’m Chinese and am picky when it comes to Chinese food places. But everything I’ve ordered has been delicious!! My favorites are the sweet and sour soup (its pretty strong and you must like pepper) and the spicy bean curd family style dish. This must be one of the last few places that still gives you free white rice instead of charging you separately for it. There truly is no other really good place for Chinese food on the Westside unless you go to Hop Li, but their prices are slighty higher. Or you could go all the way out to Westwood for a few of those Noodle houses that have popped up to satiate the high percentage of Asian Students at UCLA. But who wants to battle all that traffic to get out to Westwood on a lunch break?

VALUE: I’ve had both lunch, dinner and take out there and the portions are always LARGE, especially for the price you pay. In comparison, there’s a Japanese place right next door; while their prices are the same, the portions leave you yearning vending machine snacks by the time 2pm rolls around. Their lunch specials are around $5! You can’t beat that!

SERVICE: Seriously, I call to place my order, walk to my car because my employer doesn’t have a private lot for us, drive the 5-10 mins it takes to get there, and my food is already waiting hot and boxed up for me to pay and pick up!

This place should be renamed Cheap and Chop Chop! They don’t waste any time serving up GOOD Chinese food and you get very good value for the money.
