Comfortable Neighborhood Elegance
We were a little afraid that this place might not welcome a toddler who was along for lunch. However, the people at Cafe Europa were extremely hospitable and we even noticed several other young children in the small, cozy European-style restaurant. Beautifully decorated in a very understated, earthy way, you look around and see what seems to be a great spot for friends and family in the neighborhood. We enjoyed our food tremendously and the service was great. You also have to sample the baked goods in the dessert case, including tasty cupcakes! The flavor selection is limited compared to other cupcake offerings in town but it is still a great way to end the meal.
Dishes Tried:
Chicken Salad Sandwich
A great chicken salad sandwich, in my opinion, actually starts with really wonderful bread, and Cafe Europa uses a very hearty yet soft bread that is perfect. The chicken itself is chunked into large yet bite-sized pieces and was well-cooked. I thought it could have used more mayonnaise as the sandwich was a little dry; however, the seasoning was otherwise excellent with a nice combination of crunch from celery and nuts and savory notes from the fresh herbs.
Split Pea Soup
I love pea soup, especially flavored with ham as this one claimed to be. However, I was disappointed with this soup. I was expecting a fresh spring pea bright green color, but it was the “pea green” we all despised as children. I can overlook that if there is some obvious ham flavor to darken the color of the soup, but I did not really taste it. It seemed to be canned peas pureed to a thick paste. Disappointing, but definitely would not keep me from going back to this wonderful place.
