Hospitality

Just came home from a wonderful dinner at Fujiya-

The conversation is highly entertaining; everyone is utterly welcoming- they actually like working together and it shows. Unlike some chain restaurants, Fujiya is the kind of place where they know your name when you walk in and you feel like you can really relax.

Some people who prefer the “trendy/chic” atmosphere that many new, Americanized Japanese restaurants go for don’t appreciate the traditional charm of Fujiya… but I think it’s great. The Koi pond with pennies at the bottom couldn’t scream good family/date atmosphere any louder. I love it! :)

My favorite thing in the world to eat there?

The tempura ice cream of course!

As for my choice of entree:

Everything. Yakitori, una-don, miso (great flavor), salmon nigiri- and all their nigiri is excellent for that matter, IKURA!! (amazing…), Twin Dragon Roll, Flower Roll, Rainbow Roll, & Spider Roll just off the top of my head.

It was actually my birthday recently. I had mentioned I was just celebrating it late with a friend and they later surprised me by having about 8 of the staff come to my table and sing in Japanese a kind of matsuri-like chant. Very authentic! The ice cream they had brought to the table was even lit on fire before me as they sang and clapped in unison. Good times.

Oh and watch your hearts ladies- the sushi chef is quite the charmer~ ;)

Tempura Ice Cream ! ! !

I have no idea what it costs actually. Haha sorry

But MY GOD is it addictive!! I want some right now…….

Just to let you know, it’s crispy tempura batter on the outside (tastes nothing like vegetable tempura so don’t worry!) and the inside is vanilla or orange ice cream I believe. The hot/cold combo melts the ice cream to JUST the right softness and each time you break into the tempura shell you can hear it crunch!^^ Fun!

The Best Sushi!!!

This is one of the only places in San Antonio that I crave on a regular basis!

In response to Procuringedibles:
Just to make a correction it is called the Banzai roll in reference to the victory call of ww2 fighter pilots. Bonsai are plants.

About the idea to call it an orgasm roll…They already have an orgasm roll. It’s wonderful too, but it is one of the cooked rolls. You should try it next time!

If you were wondering the hot towels are called O’shibori and they are provided for those who intend to eat their sushi with their hands ( which is totally acceptable).

Twin Dragon Roll

I highly recommend this for those who don’t like raw fish.

San Bai Su sauce

Fujiya’s version of the typical ponzu soy sauce, but it tastes so much better. This is the only place in town to get it. Use it on sushi, rolls, rice, grilled fish. MMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! JOIN THE CLUB, become an ADDICT!

Fujiya Roll

This roll is a delectable combination of Hamachi (yellowtail (not of the tuna family)) Maguro (that tasty red tuna) avacado, spicy chili sauce, green onion and tempura crumbs. It’s all rolled up with the rice on the outside and covered in a thin layer of wasabi infused Tobiko(flying fish roe). Put a whole piece in your mouth and experience the explosion of wasabi followed by the crunchy tempura and mouth watering fish. This one is a must have for those who like raw fish in their rolls.

Imperial Garden Dinner

This dinner has a combination of fresh vegetables and thin sliced beef cutlets sizzling with a sweet but savory sake based sauce on a dome shaped platter. It will be sure to turn any new comer into a regular customer.

Onigiri

Ever want to try one of those seaweed wrapped rice balls you see in the anime shows. Order an Onigiri with with grilled salmon and see how fun it is to eat this treat right out of your hands. You can also get these with Ume (salted sour plum, Mmm) or what they call Okaka (katsobushi flakes have a smoked fish flavor).

Best Sushi Restaurant in Texas, if not USA

They have extensive knowledge of Japanese food history as well as conversation to keep you fully entertained. The sushi is better than I’ve had anywhere, including the best restaurants in Dallas and Hawaii. Definitely try the Bonzai roll. They should call it the orgasm roll.

Bonsai Roll

Should be titled the “better than sex” roll.
Inside: shrimp tempura, bonito, avacado, cream cheese wrapped in rice and seaweed, topped with avacado and salmon, drizzled with eel sauce (which i don’t normally like), sesame seeds, and bonito.
AMAZING!!
Order a glass of Hana Lychee Sake flavored wine.
