Some great dishes, but be careful what you choose

Ok, first lets get this out of the way. I lived next door to Happy Garden for about 3 years. I ate there alot, some good experiences and some bad. The service will be a let down, but the food is very worth it—- if you know what to order.

Dining in: Service is going to be disappointing. Usually slow and overwhelmed. The decor is extremely dated and the chairs are not comfortable. Most everything there is still original from the late 70’s from what I can tell. Try to use the washroom before visiting.

Take out: Usually much better. Although wait times are always longer then what they tell you on the phone. I generally do the ‘add 10’ rule. Where if they tell you it will take 25 minutes for your food to be ready, come by at 35 minutes.

Although I usually like to have some diversity in the dishes I order from a restaurant in this case I highly recommend you stick the ‘proven favorites’ I have below.

40. Mu Shu Pork (with 6 Thin Cakes)

This is what you go to Happy garden for. Fresh crepes/wraps, with hoisin sauce, diced vegtables and sliced pork. Always excellent.

3. Green Onion Cakes (1pc.)

Almost impossible to screw up, a staple.

44. Szechuan Beef (Hot)

Deep fried beef with some thin slices of carrots in Szechuan sauce. Although not awe inspiring quite good.

79. Beef Fried Noodle

Not going to blow the doors off, but a very solid dish. Green peppers, sliced beef, onions and noodles. Can’t go wrong.

46. Broccoli Beef

Never had much taste or appeal from here.

Happy Garden makes me happy

Happy Garden is obviously a family (or at least tiny) business that suffers and benefits from what that entails.

Happy Garden is not a restaurant for eager servers or really any kind of atmosphere. It’s a very basic experience with basic chairs, basic decor, and basic service. While it’s not ‘bad’ in anyway, it’s not exactly positive.

On the other hand I have never had a bad experience with the food. I wouldn’t declare anything on the menu amazing, but I have found that everything is consistently pretty good.

On the whole, Happy Garden would be the best place in the area for take out if not for the terribly limiting open hours they have.

15. Lemon Chicken

Tasty and greasy. Pleasant despite a slightly mushy consistency. I don’t know what lemon chicken is ‘supposed’ to taste like, but I always enjoy the Happy Garden dish.

18. Szechuan Chicken (Hot)

Maybe ‘outstanding’ isn’t the most accurate descriptor, but ‘good’ isn’t enough. It’s not a dish you’ll go around telling your neighbours about, but you will not regret eating it, and eating it as leftovers in the morning.
