JP23 BBQ Smokehouse celebrates its 1st anniversary in Fuller

On the busy corner of Harbor Boulevard and Commonwealth Avenue, sits JP23 BBQ Smokehouse. Jacob Poozhikala is the brain-child behind this venture. JP is Jacob’s initials plus his 23 friends from college are behind the enigmatic name. Since college, BBQ and sports have been in Jacob’s life, from his roots in Canada to moving to SoCal. Like every die-hard BBQer, you need to name your smoker for luck. At JP23, Elmer is its name. Luck has been on his side as they celebrated their 1st anniversary on St. Patrick’s Day 2014 and hired General Manager Adrienne Bennett to handle the front of the house with her proven drive of making happy patrons and successful restaurants.

Honey Chili Wings

The Honey Chili Wings were sweet and slightly spicy. It was reminiscent of a sweet Asian chili sauce commonly served with lumpia. The smoked flavor from the wings came through and paired well with the sauce. They were tender and juicy. Thumbs up, way up!

Sriracha Roasted Garlic Wings

Sriracha Roasted Garlic Wings are spicy, yet was slightly countered from the sweet roasted garlic. The sriracha flavor permeated the chicken down to the bone. I’d take these on any day over plain old Buffalo Wings. Thumbs up, way up!

Meaty Beef Ribs

Meaty Beef Ribs are dry rubbed using JP23 seasonings and allowed to rest for 24 hours. After the seasoning sets, they are slow cooked by “Elmer” for 6 to 7 hours to “fall-off-the-bone” tenderness. The beef was good on its own with just the dry rub, but if you need to slather sauce on your ribs, the Chipotle and Original paired the best. The collard greens were flavorful, yet not too salty or vinegary, with generous amounts of BACON! The Texas toast was crispy and gently flavored not to overpower the BBQ. Thumbs up!

Smoked Beef Brisket Dinner

Smoked Beef Brisket Dinner is an 8 oz. portion of tender Angus Grade-A beef brisket slowly cooked by “Elmer” and then hand carved for your plate. The brisket was tender, juicy and full of smoky flavor that just melts in your mouth like butter. This could make a great hearty baguette sandwich as well. It had enough flavor on its own, but if you need sauce, the Berry Bourbon and Original paired the best. Three Cheese Bacon Macaroni & Cheese had enormous cheesy flavor. The bacon added a smoky, salty flavor to the mix. The cornbread was dense with sweet maple flavor and actual kernels of corn still inside. Thumbs up!
