Chocolate Decadence ~ The Group Experience

If you are in dire need of a MEGA chocolate fix, then head off to Juliette & Chocolat.

I´ve been to 2 of their branches, this one on Laurier & the one in St. Denis street in the Plateau.

The Laurier one is the only one that takes group reservations, so this is where I took a group of 18 people on Feb. 13 – the day before St. Valentine´s day.

Important note:
If you want to have a chance in h#$$% of getting into Juliette & Chocolat anytime near St. Valentine´s Day, you MUST make a reservation! There was a line-up literally around the block the night our group dined & feasted on chocolate there.

Juliette & Chocolat has oodles & oodles of chocolately treats to satisfy everyone’s choco-cravings!

Choose from:

  • The classic hot chocolates:
grandma-style, fair trade, the traditionals, the dark vintages (dark chocolate), and milk vintages (milk chocolate)
  • 4 different kinds of chocolate fondues
  • a variety of chocolate flambés
  • a variety of brownies
  • a variety of sweet crepes
  • a variety of ice creams
  • a variety of tasty dessert cakes and pastries
  • a variety of cold chocolate drinks
  • a variety of chocolately alcoholic drinks
(ie choco mojito, spicy sunset with cardamom, choco ruby etc…) .

Meals also available (with no chocolate):

  • a variety of buckwheat crepes
(such as the 3 cheese, goat cheese with pears & honey, apple cider and more)
  • full range of salads

Various juices, smoothies, and alcoholic drinks also available.

Any item ordered containing alcohol must be ordered with a food item as well.

One thing about bringing a group here:
The tip is charged automatically on your bill. So be sure to confirm when you call in for a group reservation, if the tip will be included on your bills.

I ordered the semi-bitter dark vintage (dark chocolate), with the buckwheat crepes with 3 cheeses: gruyere, brie and goat cheese. Really fresh, healthy and cheese heaven. The only downside was that it was delivered cold, and I had to ask to have it warmed up.

My dark hot chocolate drove my brain into chocolate overdrive. Their chocolates, hot & cold, are made with the best, thickest, highest quality chocolate. The chocolate is so thick it looks like a soup. When that chocolately taste hits your taste buds, your mouth will think it´s fiesta time! Unbelievably delicious.

They have a great selection of buckwheat crepes, which are served with a small salad. They satisfy your salty cravings very well, as well.

The location is really beautiful. Warm wood accents through-out the 2 floors. The 2nd floor was where the groups sat & it had a warm welcoming ambiance, away from the noisy smaller tables below.

Now here is a note about the service for our group of 18.
It was a mixed bag.

I really thought the 2 waitresses serving us did their best. But they were stressed & showed it & obviously not used to serving a group as big as ours. So some things arrived very late. I was the 2nd to last person to be served and it did take some time. One or two orders were messed up for our group.

You can really tell when the servers at a resto have experience serving groups. Our group was not huge, but it was obviously demanding for them.

I observed another group that came in at the same time. They were a group of about 8-10 girls having a wild girls´ night out & the service was much smoother at their table.

So if you plan to bring a group here, I would recommend bringing a group of a maximum 10 people, for optimum service.

As a place to go with a handful of friends, it would be perfect.

The food however, is outstanding.

I was dreaming in chocolate for ages afterwards.

Overpriced and pretentious

I was here with a small group the day before Valentine’s Day. We had an upstairs room to ourselves. It was very chilly upstairs, never did warm up even after 3 hours. Service was spectacularly poor — waited 1/2 hour before learning one of the few warm mains that I could eat was not available. (Warning: if you cannot eat eggs for any reason you will have a very hard time finding non-dessert food here, other than salad.) Several mixups (me and others) that were not politely rectified. Example: I was served a second brownie that I did not order.

Waited 45 minutes for the bill (after requesting it) and found service charge added automatically to the bill. (It is announced in menu that “the law” requires the restaurant to add a service charge for groups of 6+. There is no such law.) Shortchanged (significantly and twice) at the cash. Claimed manager was not there when attempted to rectify the bill, and insisted I should pay the service charge and return the next day (Feb 14) to get credited. Service charge reluctantly removed after 10+ minute discussion with two very rude employees — who were oblivious to the crowds around us, and believe Feb 13 is Valentine’s Day.

Absolutely not worth the hype. Stay away!!

salted caramel brownie

A different taste sensation, but heavy and unevenly heated.

Viennese hot chocolate

Too small for the price.
